Description

Burns & McDonnell, with world headquarters in Kansas City, MO, is seeking an experienced Solid Waste Engineer to help lead and grow our solid waste management business in the Ohio Valley. This team supports a diverse portfolio of projects related to solid waste management, resource recovery, biogas, stormwater management, site development, remediation, sustainability, and environmental compliance.

The successful candidate will be highly self-motivated, client-focused, and eager to support a wide variety of environmental projects.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:

  • Developing new client relationships while maintaining existing client and regulatory agency partnerships.

  • Delivering internal and external presentations and supporting proposal development and business development initiatives.

  • Facility planning, permitting, design, and site development for solid waste, environmental, and civil infrastructure projects.

  • Leading projects through all phases of execution, including planning, permitting, design, procurement, bidding, construction, and closeout.

  • Managing project scope, budgets, schedules, quality, safety, reporting, and client expectations.

  • Preparing engineering designs, plans, specifications, technical reports, calculations, cost estimates, and bid documents.

  • Supporting solid waste and resource recovery initiatives, including landfill development, waste diversion programs, sustainability efforts, and strategic planning studies.

  • Supporting biogas and renewable energy projects, including feasibility studies, process evaluations, mass and energy balances, and equipment procurement activities.

  • Completing environmental permitting and regulatory compliance activities.

  • Researching and compiling project-related technical data and preparing supporting engineering analyses.

  • Reviewing contractor submittals, shop drawings, and construction documentation.

  • Providing construction support and field oversight, including construction quality assurance (CQA) activities as needed.

  • Utilizing engineering software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS, MicroStation, ArcGIS, and related design and modeling tools.

  • Monitoring industry trends, market drivers, and regulatory developments affecting solid waste and environmental infrastructure projects.

  • Supporting environmental compliance, remediation, stormwater, sustainability, and other environmental engineering projects.

  • Training, mentoring, and providing technical guidance to junior staff.

  • Completing quality reviews and ensuring adherence to company quality and safety standards.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related engineering discipline from an accredited university.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.

  • Minimum 7 years of related professional experience.

  • Demonstrated project management experience, including managing scope, schedule, budget, and client expectations.

  • Experience supporting planning, permitting, design, and construction phases of environmental and civil engineering projects.

  • Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational, leadership, and collaboration skills.

  • Experience with engineering software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS/GIS, MicroStation, Revit/BIM, and related design tools preferred.

  • Familiarity with stormwater modeling, solid waste systems, sustainability initiatives, biogas projects, and/or remediation projects preferred.

  • Proposal writing and business development experience preferred.

  • Professional society involvement preferred.

  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification preferred.

  • Available for project-related and marketing travel as needed.

Compensation

$140,000.00-200,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
