Position Summary

  • Title: Senior Payroll Tax Specialist

  • Responsible for federal and state tax compliance and tax research associated with the PEO industry.

  • Verifies accuracy and timeliness of payroll tax functions to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and company policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare or review a variety of tax-related documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable guidelines and regulations.

  • Perform tax reconciliations and determine liability for accounts, divisions, or business units.

  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of tax forms.

  • Answer questions and research discrepancies.

  • Research, interpret, and understand existing or revised tax codes, laws, or forms.

  • Modify work procedures to reflect changes in tax law or code.

  • Notify leadership of regulatory updates and propose and implement required changes.

  • Resolve escalated issues with clients or internal departments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of payroll tax and the regulatory environment, including federal, multi-state, and local tax regulations.

  • Ability to read, understand, and analyze highly complex regulatory payroll tax information.

  • Interpret and analyze complex data, make determinations independently, and ensure payroll taxes are appropriately processed.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt to a fast-paced environment.

  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively; strong customer service skills.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of three years of multi-state, multi-jurisdiction, high-volume payroll tax experience.

  • Minimum of one year of recent Senior, Lead, or Supervisor experience.

  • PEO or related industry experience preferred.

  • Hands-on tax return processing experience is required.

  • Strong knowledge of multi-state payroll, federal, state, and local wage laws required.

  • MasterTax and Prism/HRP experience preferred.

Required Licenses and/or Certifications

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamentals of Payroll Certification (FPC) preferred.
