Job Description

Welcome to the Department of Health! We’d be delighted to have you join our team. If you envision yourself in this role and are ready to start an exciting career with us, apply today!

This position is open to Alaskan Residents only. Please check out the residency definition to determine if you qualify.

What you will be doing: As a Project Coordinator with the Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), you will be responsible for advancing Alaska’s rural health priorities within a highly collaborative team. This demanding, fast-paced role requires independent judgment, initiative, clear communication, and strong accountability for both your own work and the team’s success.

You will:• Develop expertise in one or more RHTP initiatives and coordinate related work in partnership with team members, communities, Tribal health organizations, providers and state teams.

  • Develop and manage work plans, timelines, deliverables, and documentation to track progress toward program outcomes and coordinate across the team.
  • Support federal compliance, reporting, funding decisions, and program monitoring by reviewing guidance, proposals, performance information, and required submissions.
  • Coordinate with contractors, awardees, and Department staff to resolve implementation issues and keep projects moving toward measurable results.

Our organization, mission, and culture: The Department of Health works to promote and protect the health and well-being of Alaskans. The Rural Health Transformation Program is a major statewide initiative focused on strengthening access, improving health outcomes, supporting sustainable rural health systems, and advancing innovative approaches to care. The team works collaboratively across state government and with Tribal, community, health care, and federal partners to turn those goals into measurable results.

The benefits of joining our team: This is an opportunity to help shape and implement one of Alaska's largest rural health transformation efforts. The position offers exposure to program management, federal funding, policy, stakeholder engagement, and statewide health system initiatives. Team members will work with senior Department leadership and partners across Alaska while building significant project management and public-sector program experience. Flexible/hybrid work may be available, along with State of Alaska leave, retirement, health benefits, and professional development opportunities.

The working environment you can expect: This time-limited position is expected to continue through the five-year RHTP project period and is based at the Frontier Building, 3601 C Street in Anchorage or in the Alaska Office Building in downtown Juneau at 350 Main Street. Both locations offer covered parking and are close to restaurants and shopping. Hybrid telework may be available when appropriate. The work is fast-paced and collaborative, includes independent project work and statewide partner engagement, and may require periodic travel to rural communities, regional hubs, and other locations.

Who we are looking for: The ideal candidate will exercise sound judgment, take initiative, follow through on commitments, and communicate proactively. They will work independently while coordinating closely with team members and partners, adapting to changing priorities, and remaining accountable for both their work and the team’s success. They will demonstrate the following competencies:• Project Management: Applies project management principles and an understanding of grant-funded programs to assess feasibility, dependencies and risks; uses judgment to align project activities with federal requirements and evolving guidance.

  • Oral and Written Communication: Conveys complex information clearly and accurately, adapts communication to the audience and exercises discretion with sensitive matters; listens carefully, clarifies expectations and communicates proactively so others can make informed decisions.
  • Technical Expertise: Develops and applies knowledge of rural health systems, program requirements and assigned initiatives; analyzes unfamiliar issues, draws on available evidence and expertise, and recognizes when additional consultation is needed.
  • Planning and Evaluating: Assesses priorities, capacity and dependencies to determine workable approaches; adjusts plans as conditions change and uses evidence to evaluate progress, identify gaps and recommend improvements.
