Responsibilities

The Surgical Technologist provides safe and efficient care to the surgical patient under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in collaboration with the surgeon. The Surgical Technologist functions primarily in the scrub role and is responsible for selecting, preparing, and maintaining instrumentation, equipment, and supplies. The Surgical Technologist possesses knowledge in the application of sterile and aseptic technique and is able to adapt to unpredictable situations within the perioperative setting. The Surgical Technologist utilizes knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, surgical instrumentation and technology as member of the surgical team.

Candidates may be considered for placement into either the Surgical Technologist or Advanced Surgical Technologist role based on years of experience, specialty training, and meeting the qualifications of the higher-level position.

The Advanced Surgical Technologist expands on this foundation by supporting complex procedures, such as cardiothoracic, transplant, neurosurgery, and vascular and by contributing to protocol development, specialty instrumentation management, and workflow optimization for advanced surgical service lines.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited or military surgical technology program.

Additional Qualifications

  • 1 year of surgical tech experience is preferred.

Certification/Licensure

  • Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required within one year of hire date and maintained thereafter.

  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.

Surgical Technologists hired at the following locations prior to the identified dates, are not required to have a Surgical Technology certification through NBSTSA:

  • Mayo Clinic in Arizona hires prior to 11/20/2024.

Qualifications and Additional Responsibilities for Advanced Surgical Technologist

Minimum 2+ years of independent scrubbing experience.

Independently supports advanced procedures in one of the following specialties: cardiac, transplant, neurosurgery, or vascular, or has cross-trained to work independently in three or more specialties outside of these advanced areas.

Manage and maintain advanced specialty instrumentation and equipment.

Contribute to protocol and workflow development for new procedures and technologies.

Demonstrates the ability to be prepared to handle emergencies that may include quick thinking, adaptability, and solid skills to implement emergency protocols.

Works flexible hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call expectations.

Internal applicants currently employed by Mayo Clinic are required to attach their three most recent performance appraisals. If less than three completed, please attach as many as are available.

Schedule Details

Nights: Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Hours: 1845 – 0715 3 x 12-hour shifts per week Posted shift may change based on department needs and could include Day, or Midday shift coverage.

Weekend Schedule

Holiday call is the only call requirement for team members working the weekend. All call requires a 30-minute response time, and call rooms are available to reserve through security as needed if the candidate lives outside the 30-minute window.
