About this Position: This position is located in the Materials and Testing Section and serves as lead worker over lower level Engineering Technicians in the Soils & Aggregate Testing Labs. It requires extensive training and experience in the soils and aggregate testing field to be able to determine the classification and performance capabilities of soil samples from deep foundation borings, as well as aggregate samples for use in Portland Cement Concrete and Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete. Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience; OR

Eighteen semester hours in one of the following specialized fields: architecture, cartography, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics. • Receives samples from Soils Exploration Unit taken from sites of proposed new structures, or structures to be improved or replaced, such as bridges, radio towers, buildings, levees, and culverts. Determines testing program requested for that project and applies it to samples received by marking samples with test procedures required, to be performed by lower level technicians.
• Performs complex test procedures such as Unconfined Compression of Soils, One-dimensional Consolidation Properties of Soils, and Undrained-Unconsolidated Strength of Cohesive Soils in Triaxial Compression, as well as other tests required to determine the classification and performance capabilities of the in-situ soils according to AASHTO and ASTM procedures.
• Collects, organizes, reviews, and summarizes test results from the deep foundation borings for their classification and inclusion in the boring logs for their use by the Design Division.
• Serves as lead-worker for the performance of the Department's Aggregate Quality Assurance Program.
• Performs and reviews results of durability and performance tests such as Abrasion Loss of Small-Size Coarse Aggregate Using the Los Angeles Machine (AASHTO T96) and Soundness of Aggregate Using Sodium Sulfate or Magnesium Sulfate (AASHTO T104) and others.
