Full job description

Engineer Intern 1-2 – Traffic Engineering At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving. DOTD is seeking a Traffic Engineer to support the design, review, and improvement of traffic control devices, traffic signals, signing, roadway geometric features, and other traffic engineering improvements for transportation projects throughout Louisiana. This position supports the development and delivery of safe and efficient transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, preparing and reviewing engineering plans and studies, and assisting with the development of traffic engineering solutions. No prior engineering experience is required. Training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Engineering job series. This position is located in East Baton Rouge Parish and reports to an Engineer 6. NOTE: Applications will be accepted from persons who possess a current Engineer Intern Certificate in states other than Louisiana. Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com.The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.Job Duties: Depending on level and assignment, the Engineer Intern 1-2 may:

  • Assist with the design and development of project plans for traffic control devices, including traffic signals, regulatory and guide signs, pavement markings, and roadway geometric features.
  • Prepare engineering plans using CADD software, including plan sheets, quantities, specifications, cost estimates, shop drawings, and other project details.
  • Conduct and review traffic engineering studies and reports involving traffic control, work zones, signing, traffic signals, project permits, and roadway operations.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analyze field data to support roadway geometric design, signal timing, traffic operations, and traffic control improvements.
  • Review roadway geometry and traffic control designs for compliance with DOTD policies, standards, manuals, and applicable state and federal guidance.
  • Assist with the development of standard plans, typical details, special details, and plan sheets for transportation projects.
  • Review designs prepared by other engineering professionals and assist with evaluating design exceptions when proposed designs fall outside established standards.
  • Use traffic engineering, CADD, mapping/GIS, and related software to evaluate transportation conditions and develop engineering solutions.
  • Assist with the preparation of Traffic Engineering scopes and provide technical support to other DOTD sections, local municipalities, and transportation partners.
  • Attend project and public meetings and assist the project team with technical information related to traffic engineering projects.

Position-Specific Details: Appointment Type: This position may be filled by probational appointment, promotion, or detail to special duty in accordance with applicable State Civil Service rules. Career Progression: This position is part of a Career Progression Group and may be filled as an Engineer Intern 1 or Engineer Intern 2, depending on the qualifications of the selected applicant. Although recruitment for this vacancy is limited to the Engineer Intern 1 and Engineer Intern 2 levels, the position has a Career Progression Group cap of Engineer 5. Following appointment, an employee may be eligible for career progression through the Engineering job series in accordance with State Civil Service requirements, DOTD policy, satisfactory performance, and demonstrated ability to perform duties at the higher level. Compensation: The following Special Entrance Rates (SER) apply:

  • Engineer Intern 1: $2,115.20 biweekly
  • Engineer Intern 2: $2,263.20 biweekly

Additional compensation may be considered for applicants who possess extraordinary job-related qualifications or credentials in accordance with State Civil Service Rule 6.5(g) and DOTD policy. Any additional compensation is subject to approval, verification, and applicable pay limitations.
