Overview

Position Summary

The Assistant Critical Facilities Manager supports the Critical Facilities Manager in the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the TCC mission critical facility in San Antonio. This role provides day-to-day technical and operational leadership for critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure, coordinates maintenance and incident response, and helps lead the onsite team toward the goal of 100 percent availability.

Reporting to the Critical Facilities Manager, the ACFM serves as an onsite client contact and an operational escalation point. The ACFM reinforces a strong safety culture, disciplined procedure use, accurate documentation, and continuous learning across the team. This is a non-exempt position.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Critical Facilities Manager in directing daily operations and maintenance for critical electrical, mechanical, fire and life safety, controls, and monitoring systems.

  • Provide technical direction to critical facilities technicians and act for the Critical Facilities Manager when assigned. Help set priorities, coordinate shift coverage, and maintain clear turnover between teams.

  • Serve as a day-to-day onsite contact for facility matters. Communicate operating status, planned work, incidents, risks, and follow-up actions to the client and ABM leadership within required service levels.

  • Lead the use and improvement of methods of procedure, standard operating procedures, and emergency operating procedures. Verify that procedures are accurate, approved, understood, and followed before work begins.

  • Apply change-control and safe-work practices to planned maintenance, switching, testing, repairs, and vendor activity. Review risk, prerequisites, rollback steps, and required approvals before execution.

  • Monitor facility conditions and capacity through available BAS, BMS, EPMS, DCIM, and alarm-management tools. Coordinate response to abnormal conditions while minimizing risk and business impact.

  • Direct and escalate emergency response, including after-hours events. Coordinate onsite personnel, stabilize conditions, maintain timely communication, and support incident investigation, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action closure.

  • Plan and coordinate preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance. Ensure work is scheduled, communicated, completed on time, quality checked, and documented accurately in the computerized maintenance management system in accordance with service level agreements.

  • Coordinate contractors, vendors, and service providers. Confirm scope, access, safety requirements, procedure compliance, work quality, documentation, and performance against contract expectations.

  • Support commissioning, operational-readiness activities, infrastructure upgrades, and site projects as assigned, including test coordination, issue tracking, documentation, and turnover to operations.

  • Assist with staffing plans, employee schedules, paid-time-off coverage, timekeeping, payroll review, coaching, training, and performance feedback. Build technical depth through drills, procedure reviews, and hands-on learning.

  • Assist with operating budgets, purchasing, subcontract administration, expense control, and forecasting. Identify practical improvements that increase safety, reliability, efficiency, or maintainability without increasing operational risk.

  • Maintain accurate logs, reports, permits, inspection records, maintenance history, and other records required by ABM, the client, and applicable regulations. Support internal and client audits and close assigned findings on time.

Critical Systems Knowledge

The successful candidate should understand how critical electrical and mechanical systems work together and how maintenance or switching on one system can affect the broader facility. Relevant equipment and tools may include:

  • Electrical distribution equipment such as utility service, switchgear, transformers, generators, UPS systems, batteries, automatic or static transfer switches, PDUs, RPPs, and branch power distribution.

  • Mechanical and cooling equipment such as chillers, pumps, cooling towers, air-handling equipment, CRAC or CRAH units, ventilation, and associated controls.

  • Building automation, building management, electrical power monitoring, data center infrastructure management, fire detection and suppression, and life-safety systems.

  • Electrical one-line diagrams, mechanical schematics, control drawings, sequence-of-operations documents, maintenance procedures, and equipment manuals.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Technical education or at least three years of equivalent experience in critical operations, electrical or mechanical systems, high-performance manufacturing, relevant military operations, or another comparable environment.

  • At least three years of experience in a position demonstrating leadership among peers. Experience as a lead technician, shift lead, chief engineer, or supervisor is relevant.

  • Working knowledge of mission critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure and the operational risks associated with maintenance, alarms, switching, and equipment failure.

  • Experience using a computerized maintenance management system to plan, track, document, and close maintenance work.

  • Working knowledge of purchasing, subcontractor coordination, and vendor management.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical conditions, risk, and next steps to technicians, managers, and clients.

  • Ability to organize competing priorities, maintain accurate records, and make sound decisions during time-sensitive events.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a data center, semiconductor facility, healthcare facility, utility operation, telecommunications site, high-performance manufacturing plant, or another 24x7 critical environment.

  • Experience supervising or developing technicians in electrical, mechanical, controls, or critical facilities operations.

  • Experience with MOP, SOP, and EOP development; change control; incident management; root-cause analysis; corrective actions; drills; audits; or operational-readiness testing.

  • Knowledge of lockout tagout, electrical safe-work practices, arc-flash hazards, OSHA requirements, and NFPA 70E principles appropriate to the work being directed.

  • Relevant technical, trade, military, safety, or critical-facilities certifications.

Schedule and Physical Requirements

  • This role supports a continuously operating facility. The regular schedule is determined by account needs, and availability may be required for planned maintenance, emergencies, or other after-hours events.

  • Work may require prolonged sitting or standing and lifting or moving objects weighing 50 pounds or more.

  • The employee must be able to work safely in and access the facility areas required to perform the role, with or without reasonable accommodation.
