Job Title: VDC TechnicianJob Description

As a VDC Technician, you will be a key contributor on a growing Virtual Design and Construction team, creating LOD 400 mechanical and plumbing models, prefabrication drawings, and coordinated BIM deliverables that connect engineering design directly to field installation. Working at the intersection of design and construction, you will collaborate daily with project managers, field foremen, and engineering staff on industrial, healthcare, hospitality, commercial, higher education, and multifamily projects. This role offers a clear growth path toward VDC leadership as the team continues to expand.

Responsibilities

  • Model mechanical and plumbing systems at LOD 400 using Autodesk Fabrication for Revit, based on issued construction documents and approved equipment submittals, ensuring compliance with trade standards and local codes.

  • Produce detailed mechanical and plumbing shop drawings and spool drawings using Evolve and/or Stratus, including comprehensive bills of materials (BOMs) for all pipework and accessories.

  • Create and maintain Revit families based on approved submittals and verify all critical dimensions against manufacturer content.

  • Develop fabrication-ready piping and mechanical models for industrial and process environments, including active-plant settings.

  • Deliver BIM coordination and sleeve layouts for healthcare and medical facility construction projects.

  • Produce fully coordinated mechanical and plumbing models for hospitality, commercial, and retail projects such as high-end restaurants and hotels.

  • Coordinate mechanical retrofits and new construction models for educational campuses and similar facilities.

  • Represent the organization in MEP coordination meetings with architects, engineers, general contractors, code officials, and other trades, leading clash detection efforts, running clash reports, and maintaining detailed meeting documentation.

  • Provide direct field support through site visits for surveys, progress checks, quality control inspections, and in-person coordination with installation crews.

  • Partner with project managers on the development of RFIs and change orders, and participate in preconstruction reviews to identify and optimize prefabrication opportunities.

  • Assist in database management and contribute to the development and continuous improvement of VDC standards, spooling processes, and prefabrication workflows.

  • Support engineering staff with production drawings, submittals, equipment selection, and system layout decisions as workload requires.

  • Help design and coordinate racks and skids for mechanical and plumbing systems within small to medium commercial projects.

  • Mentor and train junior designers and coordinators, and actively contribute to a collaborative team culture with an eye toward future VDC leadership responsibilities.

  • Manage multiple project timelines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while maintaining high quality and attention to detail.

Essential Skills

  • Associate's degree in CAD/Drafting, Mechanical Design, or a related technical field, or 3+ years of equivalent hands-on experience, which may include field apprentice backgrounds with strong computer proficiency.

  • At least 2 years of experience drafting in Revit, AutoCAD, or comparable BIM/CAD software.

  • At least 2 years of experience in MEP engineering, mechanical or plumbing construction, or a closely related field.

  • Proficiency with Autodesk Fabrication for Revit and related tools, with the ability to produce coordinated 3D drawings and run clash detection reports.

  • Working knowledge of mechanical and plumbing system design principles and MEP design and drafting practices.

  • Strong proficiency with computers, Microsoft 365, plotters, and printers.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and critically evaluate plans and specifications, including mechanical and plumbing drawings.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to represent the organization professionally in internal and external coordination meetings.

  • High attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality control standards.

  • Ability to work independently after onboarding and exercise sound judgment when determining which issues to escalate.

  • Ability and willingness to visit active construction sites for surveys, progress checks, and quality assurance activities.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced construction and design environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Autodesk Fabrication for Revit and Navisworks, including the ability to produce coordinated 3D models and run detailed clash detection reports.

  • Working knowledge of Minnesota Mechanical and Plumbing Codes and related local regulations.

  • Experience with design-build workflows, including collaborating with general contractors, managing RFIs, and supporting construction phase coordination.

  • Familiarity with spool drawing production using Evolve and/or Stratus and experience supporting prefabrication and fabrication spooling workflows.

  • Experience with BIM coordination for MEP systems, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing disciplines.

  • Hands-on experience with racks and skids design and coordination for mechanical and plumbing systems.

  • Experience in small to medium commercial projects, including hospitality, healthcare, industrial, and educational facilities.

  • Knowledge of mechanical and plumbing system design principles, with the ability to assist engineering staff with system layout decisions.

  • Experience mentoring or training junior designers or coordinators and a strong interest in growing into a VDC leadership role.

  • Comfort working with bill of materials (BOM) creation, review, and maintenance for mechanical and plumbing components.

  • Familiarity with construction workflows, field installation practices, and coordination with trade partners.
