Full job description

  • Report directly to the Division Director for Staff Development and Training.
  • In-depth understanding of nursing practice, clinical assessments, IV therapy, phlebotomy, and adult learning techniques.
  • Documentation standards; strong knowledge of medical-legal charting principles to teach clear, objective note-writing.
  • Program management: Ability to organize, schedule, and run training programs for both state and 3rd party contract medical staff.
  • Cross-department coordination: Ability to communicate and work effectively with wardens, security supervisors, healthcare staff, and agency leadership.
  • Audit and review: Skill in evaluating training programs, auditing clinical records, etc.
  • Must be able to model wellness and be physically fit to demonstrate practicals during training for trainer's courses, i.e. first aid, CPR/AED, etc.
  • Plans conducts practical skills training and clinical evaluations for nursing staff during onboarding and annual reviews.
  • Leads medical provider orientation on balancing independent judgement with facility security.
  • Coordinates new nurse orientation and general medical onboarding alongside the division of health services.
  • Acts as the agency's lead instructor for first aid, CPR/AED, BLS, respiratory protection and Narcan programs, certifies lieutenants across 21 facilities and staff development and training center to ensure consistent life-safety training.
  • Teaches assigned medical, wellness and first aid modules in correctional officer basic, annual in-service and specialized academy courses, assist with clinical record audits.
  • Tracks budget, ordering, and upkeep for medical training supplies, CPR mannequins, and simulation gear.
  • Provide medical triage on academy grounds during incidents until EMS arrives.
  • Resume highly recommended, not required.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and related nursing experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in nursing and one (1) year experience as a registered nurse.

OR

  • An associate degree in nursing and three (3) years experience as a registered nurse.

  • Must have an active nursing license in the State of South Carolina or qualifying compact state.

  • Must have basic life support certification or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire.

  • Must be skilled in evaluating training programs, auditing clinical records, and conducting nurse orientation/practical skills training.
