Description
The Department of Linguistics at Stony Brook University invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in phonology beginning Fall 2027. The successful candidate will have a PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Linguistics (or related field) in hand by the start of the appointment, an active research program in theoretical phonology, and prior teaching experience preferably in phonology. Applicants with additional expertise in areas such as field research, phonetics, specialized language areas, computational, experimental, and mathematical approaches to the study of language are especially encouraged to apply.
The ideal candidate is expected to:

Maintain an active research program in theoretical phonology which addresses core concerns of the field and complements and enhances the Department’s strengths, and apply for grant/fellowship funding.

Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in phonology and contribute to the teaching of the Department’s core curriculum and the development of the Department’s graduate and undergraduate degree programs. (The usual teaching load is 2 courses per semester.)

Advise and mentor a diverse student body of graduate and undergraduate students, and supervise student research.

Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) in Linguistics (or related field) in hand by the start of the appointment

Specialization and active research program in theoretical phonology

Prior teaching experience
Preferred:

Additional expertise in related areas, including, but not limited to, field research, phonetics, specialized language areas, computational, experimental, and mathematical approaches to the study of language.

Prior teaching experience in phonology

Documented teaching excellence

Experience in advising and mentoring students

Prior application for grant and/or fellowship funding
