Full job description

Description

How cloud customers experience billing — from the pricing they see, to the costs they manage, to the bills they pay — is foundational to how they trust and grow with AWS. Today, that experience is ready for a transformation: one that brings the commercial simplicity of amazon.com to the cloud, in near real-time, across every customer segment. Are you ready to define the technical strategy that makes that possible?

About the Team

AWS Billing is responsible for processing all AWS revenue — computing millions of bills daily and reliably handling billions of usage records per second across every AWS service, customer, and partner worldwide. Our systems ensure that financial data is fully auditable, accurate, and timely, while simultaneously adapting to evolving pricing models, contract structures, and regulatory environments.

We are at an inflection point. Small customers need pricing simplicity, cost predictability, and real-time visibility into their usage — so they can use AWS without fear of surprise costs. Large enterprise and government customers need commercial flexibility, configurable pricing, and democratized cost management. New opportunities are emerging to externalize our billing and pricing capabilities as a platform, and to support new pricing models that give AWS the commercial agility required to stay competitive. Increasingly, the systems we build will also need to serve autonomous agents interacting with billing, pricing, and cost data in fundamentally different ways than humans do today. These challenges are not met well by any cloud provider today, so there is a lot to invent.

Key job responsibilities

Define and own the multi-year technical strategy for billing architecture, partnering with engineering leaders and scientists across the organization to guide the next generation of billing systems — more composable, more adaptable, and built to evolve at the velocity the business requires.

Drive architectural decisions that span multiple organizations across AWS service teams, Marketplace, Sales, and Finance, ensuring alignment on how billing systems transform from batch-oriented financial processing into a real-time platform.

Provide technical guidance across billing and commerce teams, increasing productivity and effectiveness through deep knowledge of distributed systems, real-time processing, enterprise architecture, and generative AI technology.

Ensure the quality of architecture and design across billing systems by decomposing complex problems into straightforward, scalable solutions, with a focus on performance optimization and engineering practices that enable systems to scale seamlessly.

Mentor engineers and the broader community on advanced distributed systems challenges, helping develop technical talent across billing engineering teams while maintaining a pragmatic focus on business outcomes.

A day in the life

You will balance understanding the nuances of how customers — from startups to the world's largest enterprises — interact with AWS billing and cost management, while shaping the architectural vision that makes those experiences seamless. On any given day, you may lead a design review for a next-generation pricing engine, align with partner teams on integration patterns for a new AWS service launch, or work hands-on with engineers to prototype a real-time billing pipeline. You will navigate competing stakeholder priorities while maintaining a high bar for accuracy, performance, operational resilience, and system efficiency. You will also play a key role in shaping how the engineering organization leverages AI to accelerate development, testing, and delivery across the billing platform.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

15+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems in a multi-tiered, service-oriented environment

Experience defining and driving multi-year technical strategy across multiple engineering teams

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

Experience with high-volume data processing systems, real-time computation, or financial/billing systems at scale

Experience modeling complex pricing, contractual, or regulatory business rules in software

Familiarity with generative AI technologies and their application to software development workflows

Experience influencing technical direction across organizational boundaries without direct authority
