Associate Professor or Professor of Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies

The Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality (WGS) at the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, beginning August 10, 2027, in the areas of gender and sexuality studies with specific expertise in Global Souths, Diasporas, Transnationalism, Migration studies, and/or the Islamic world. All disciplinary approaches are welcome, including scholars in the humanities. We especially encourage applications from scholars whose work brings feminist, queer, and/or WGS lenses to questions of religion, religious belonging, spirituality, and religious worlds, including but not limited to the diverse histories, cultures, intellectual traditions, and contemporary formations of Muslim communities across the globe. We also encourage applications from scholars who examine public health or justice and security, broadly conceived. We welcome scholars whose work is invested in the geographies, histories, and intellectual traditions of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and/or the Pacific. The successful candidate will join a vibrant community of scholars comprising ten faculty in the Department of WGS which offers an undergraduate major and a graduate certificate. The teaching load is two courses per semester, and the duties include service to the department, the university and the profession.

Minimum qualifications.

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, applicants should hold a PhD.

Preferred qualifications

We are seeking applicants with a strong publication record and an outstanding research program. Candidates should demonstrate prior excellence in teaching and mentorship of students and willingness to contribute to the goals of the University and the scholarly life of the Department of WGS. The ideal candidate will be committed to interdisciplinarity and able to effectively work with colleagues across various disciplines, subfields, and backgrounds. Candidates whose work would contribute to the conversation of UVA's Islamic Worlds Initiative would be particularly welcome to apply.
