Assistant or Associate Professor of Education (Reading)

The School of Education and Human Development (https://education.virginia.edu/) at the University of Virginia seeks an innovative scholar in the area of reading and/or reading disability for a position at the assistant or associate professor level. This is a 9-month, salaried, tenure-eligible faculty position in the Reading Education Program in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction & Special Education (https://education.virginia.edu/offices-departments/curriculum-instruction-special-education) .

The school is especially interested in applicants whose work spans reading education and special education. Preference will be given to individuals who conduct cutting-edge research in the area of literacy in the elementary and/or secondary grades. This may include scholarship that considers how digital technology may serve as a support for adolescent readers and/or the ways in which adolescent literacy may impact or be impacted by digital tools/digital fluency. Candidates with such a focus would be connected with one of the University's Grand Challenge initiatives (described below).

This faculty member will collaborate with program and department faculty to design and deliver undergraduate, master's, and doctoral-level courses in the Teacher Education and Reading Education programs. They will also advise and mentor master's- and doctoral-degree students. The successful candidate will also show evidence of collaborating with colleagues to develop course and/or curriculum materials. They will also show evidence of experience designing and conducting rigorous research, working with collaborators across disciplines, and seeking extramural research funding.

This faculty member may work with the UVA Thriving Youth in a Digital Environment (TYDE (https://tyde.virginia.edu/) ) Grand Challenge. The University of Virginia's 2030 plan recognizes Digital Technology and Society as a major societal challenge and an opportunity for multidisciplinary work that draws on our existing strengths. In partnership, the Provost and the deans of various schools are making multiple coordinated faculty recruitments to strengthen the research community focusing on Digital Technology and Youth Development across the University. Duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to teaching, advising, mentoring and participation in program, departmental and school meetings are to be conducted primarily on-Grounds and in-person at the University of Virginia.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

• Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education, Reading Education, Special Education, or a related field

• Experience teaching students to read in elementary or secondary education contexts

• A strong record of scholarship that demonstrates the ability to make links between theory, research, and implications for practice and policy

• A track record of extramural funding for candidates being considered at the associate professor level

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

• Experience teaching courses in reading/literacy development at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral level

• Experience with online teaching

• A strong record of collaborative research and teaching
