What you need to be successful in this role:

  • Assist with spotting cars on the correct track; move empty cars and build the outbound train

  • Responsible for daily railcar movement

  • Learn to operate a locomotive - we provide training and certification

  • Visually inspect rail cars and perform minor repairs

  • Prepare necessary paperwork associated with the movement of the railcars

  • Understand and adhere to rail rules and safety regulations as prescribed by Savage, our customer, and the Railroad

  • Work 12-hour rotating shifts

  • One year or more of Rail Industry experience is a plus

  • Work experience in an industrial environment is also a plus

Key strengths of the successful locomotive operator:

  • Willing to complete general safety, switchman, locomotive, and distributive power training

  • Understands the importance of good communication with the customer and other Savage employees

  • Understands the importance of customer service and is able to deliver service to the customer professionally

  • Strong communication and listening skills, including the ability to read, write, and understand English

Physical Requirements:

  • Climb on and off railcars and locomotives

  • Pass the plant's site requirement test

  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Walk 1+ miles per day on uneven terrain, etc.

  • Ability to work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time
