THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON BID AWARD.
The Senior Industrial Hygienist provides technical support for DOI occupational safety and health programs through hazard assessments, exposure evaluations, program reviews, data analysis, and development of risk-based recommendations. The position supports workplace health protection initiatives, regulatory compliance efforts, exposure assessment programs, technical reporting, and stakeholder engagement to improve occupational health and safety outcomes.
Responsibilities
Program Evaluation and Compliance
-
Conduct independent evaluations of occupational safety and health programs, policies, procedures, and management systems.
-
Review safety management plans, standard operating procedures, job hazard analyses, training records, incident-reporting processes, corrective-action systems, and related documentation.
-
Assess regulatory compliance, program effectiveness, and consistency of implementation across applicable operations.
-
Identify program strengths, deficiencies, and implementation gaps, and develop practical, risk-based recommendations to improve performance and worker protection.
Industrial Hygiene and Exposure Assessment
-
Perform qualitative and quantitative workplace exposure assessments using accepted industrial hygiene practices and methodologies.
-
Evaluate actual and potential employee exposures to chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic, thermal, and psychosocial hazards.
-
Develop and document Similar Exposure Groups (SEGs), workplace exposure profiles, and risk-prioritization criteria.
-
Conduct or support industrial hygiene monitoring activities, including air sampling, noise assessments, and other exposure measurements.
-
Analyze exposure information to characterize risk and establish priorities for additional evaluation, monitoring, and control measures.
Data Management and Technical Documentation
-
Use DOI systems, including the Safety Management Information System Exposure Assessment Module (SMIS EA), to document and maintain industrial hygiene information.
-
Enter and maintain workplace, process, hazard, employee-assignment, and exposure-assessment data.
-
Develop exposure-assessment records, monitoring plans, and risk-prioritization documentation.
-
Maintain complete, accurate, and traceable technical records, including field notes, sampling records, analytical reports, and calibration information.
Project Planning, Reporting, and Communication
-
Develop project plans, exposure-evaluation strategies, monitoring approaches, Exposure Assessment and Control Workplans, and Routine Monitoring Plans.

Prepare technical reports, executive summaries, briefings, and recommendations that clearly communicate findings, risks, and proposed controls.
-
Present findings and recommendations to workers, management officials, project leadership, and government stakeholders.
-
Conduct interviews with supervisors, managers, safety personnel, employees, and subject matter experts to support program reviews and exposure assessments.
-
Coordinate with project managers, Contracting Officers Representatives (CORs), and other government stakeholders throughout project execution.
Project Support and Quality Control
-
Support implementation of occupational health and safety initiatives, corrective actions, and recommended control measures.
-
Participate in kickoff meetings, project status reviews, field activities, and final customer briefings.
-
Support quality-control activities and technical peer reviews to ensure deliverables are accurate, complete, and consistent with project requirements.
-
Travel as required to support field assessments and project objectives.
-
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
-
Master's degree or higher in Industrial Hygiene or related discipline.
-
Possess Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential.
-
Minimum twelve (12) years relevant industrial hygiene experience.
-
Successfully pass background and drug screening.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
-
Demonstrated experience leading complex occupational health and industrial hygiene programs.
-
Experience developing agency-wide or enterprise-level occupational safety and health policies and procedures.
-
Experience conducting comprehensive evaluations of occupational safety and health programs.
-
Experience developing strategic industrial hygiene and exposure-assessment programs.
-
Experience implementing AIHA exposure-assessment methodologies, including Similar Exposure Groups and risk-based prioritization models.
-
Experience supporting federal occupational safety and health programs.
-
Experience presenting complex technical findings, risks, and recommendations to senior leadership and other stakeholders.
-
Experience managing or leading multidisciplinary occupational health projects with competing priorities and deadlines.
-
Experience applying OSHA standards, DOI occupational safety and health requirements, and other applicable federal agency health and safety requirements.
-
Advanced knowledge of industrial hygiene principles, exposure-assessment strategies, occupational health risk evaluation, and the hierarchy of controls.
-
Knowledge of OSHA standards, occupational health regulations, and applicable federal safety requirements.
-
Knowledge of chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic, thermal, and psychosocial workplace hazards.
-
Experience applying AIHA exposure-assessment strategies to characterize exposures and establish monitoring priorities.
-
Ability to evaluate workplace hazards and exposure risks and recommend practical, effective controls.
-
Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
-
Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills for technical and nontechnical audiences.
-
Ability to collect, organize, analyze, interpret, and document occupational exposure data.
-
Ability to prepare clear, accurate technical reports, project plans, presentations, executive summaries, and briefings.
-
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of multidisciplinary teams.
-
Ability to travel and perform office- and field-based assessments as required.
