Full job description

This position requires that you must be a US Citizen for consideration and meet all Federal Contractor employee requirements. Nomad GCS does not support the H1B Visa for this position.

Position : Software Engineering Intern

Division : Innovative Solutions Group

Department : Mechanical Engineering

Status : Internship (Full Time)

Overview: As a Software Engineering Intern within the Innovative Solutions Group, you will contribute to the development of an integrated embedded system platform, while gaining hands-on experience across the full stack – from low level Linux environments and middleware services to modern front end user interfaces.

This internship is structured after our Software Engineer I framework, allowing you to collaborate with experienced engineers to design, develop, test, and optimize components within our embedded Linux system, Kotlin-based middleware services, and React front end, while being mentored by Senior Engineers across multiple technical platforms. This position also allows opportunities to contribute code that directly impacts customer-facing systems and provides a deeper understanding of modern software development practices and full-stack architecture.

Key Responsibilities & Core Learning Activities

  • Assist in developing and maintaining software for an embedded Linux environment, including system services, processes, and configuration.

  • Contribute to Kotlin-based middleware components, including API development, data processing, and integration layers.

  • Support front-end development using React, helping build intuitive, performant user interfaces.

  • Participate in debugging, testing, and root-cause analysis across the stack.

  • Collaborate with engineering mentors in code reviews, architecture discussions, and agile workflows.

  • Write clear, maintainable code and create supporting documentation.

  • Help improve system performance, reliability, and development tooling.

Discipline & Team Exposure - Nomad Engineering is organized into key disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, IT, Human Factors, Software) and operational teams. As an intern, you may gain exposure to one or more of the following areas:

  • Standards & Modularity: Engineering templates, modules, and rules for scale.

  • Design Engineering: Executing project-level CAD and custom configurations.

  • Advanced Engineering: First-of-kind prototyping and novel mechanical systems.

  • Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering: Ensuring manufacturability, safety, and continuous improvement on the production floor.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science program in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field (typically completed sophomore or junior year).

  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems and basic command-line tools.

  • Experience with at least one programming language (Kotlin or Java preferred).

  • Understanding of modern JavaScript frameworks; exposure to React is a plus.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn complex systems.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Experience with embedded systems, OS fundamentals, or hardware–software interaction.

  • Knowledge of REST APIs, asynchronous programming, or microservice-based design.

  • Exposure to build and automation tools (Gradle, npm, CI/CD).

  • Familiarity with Git and common branching strategies.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand and sit for extended periods.

  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment.

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

  • Occasional climbing or hands-on testing activities.

  • Ability to work in office, shop, and vehicle environments as needed.

  • Ability to work safely around energized systems when required.

  • Must be able to travel as needed on occasion.

Working Environment:

  • Combination of office, production floor, and vehicle-based environments.

  • Exposure to manufacturing noise, electrical equipment, and testing environments.

  • PPE required when entering production or testing areas.
