Full job description

About the Team OpenAI didn’t begin as a traditional company. It began as an idea: that artificial intelligence could be developed in a way that benefits everyone. As a creative team, our role is to help make sure the work behind that idea is understood, as it leaves the lab and meets the world. This company works at the frontier of intelligence. Like any frontier, it’s unfinished, constantly shifting, and still being explored. Our job is to stay close to that uncertainty and help shape how this story gets told, in a way that feels grounded and human. We do this through campaigns, launches, films, brand systems, and work that doesn’t fit neatly into any of those categories yet. This team is for people who want to help shape something from the beginning. About the Opportunity We’re looking for a hands-on Art Director to help develop and make work across campaigns, research launches, and social. In the near term, you’ll focus on supporting research-related creative projects and launches, with opportunities to contribute more broadly. You’re a visual thinker and a maker: someone who can find a strong visual idea, build a quick prototype, and carry it through to execution. You bring craft, curiosity, and resourcefulness, and enjoy creating content across mediums with a small team, a short timeline, or an evolving brief. You’ll bring art direction and visual storytelling to projects that turn complex technology into ideas people connect with. Working closely with creative leads, copywriters, designers, and other creative partners, you’ll develop the visual approach and bring a distinctive point of view from concept through execution. This role is based in New York City and works across campaign and social, in close collaboration with OpenAI’s Creative, Marketing, Product, and Communications teams. In this role, you will:

  • Develop and make visual ideas across campaigns and social, from the first concept through launch, supporting priorities across the creative team

  • Own hands-on art direction and design for assigned projects, partnering with copywriters and other creatives to bring clear, distinctive stories to life

  • Prototype quickly through visual concepts, mockups, storyboards, rough edits, and other working examples that help the team test and develop ideas

  • Create visual work across formats, including short-form video, social posts, digital experiences, and campaign assets, adapting ideas to the medium and audience

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, creators, and production partners, staying close to execution and using feedback to improve the work

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have 8+ years of relevant experience

  • Bring a strong portfolio of campaign and social work that shows original thinking, distinctive art direction, and what you personally made, from early experiments to finished work

  • Have strong craft in art direction and design, with the range and curiosity to build across mediums and a strong instinct for culture and social platforms

  • Are a resourceful maker who can prototype, create, and iterate independently within an established creative direction, using the tools that best bring an idea to life

  • Enjoy working quickly with lean teams and evolving briefs, balancing strong craft with the judgment to know when to test, refine, or ship

  • Enjoy partnering closely with copywriters, designers, and other creatives, welcome feedback, and collaborate generously with creative and cross-functional teams
