About Phoenix Tailings

Phoenix Tailings is a rapidly growing clean mining and metals production startup focused on building a domestic supply of critical materials.

Our Freedom Facility in Rochester, New York will be a commercial-scale rare earth separation facility designed to expand U.S. capacity to process and separate rare earth materials.

Rare earths are essential inputs for many of the technologies that power modern life. They are used in high-performance permanent magnets found in electric vehicles, wind turbines, robotics, advanced electronics, aerospace systems, and defense applications.

Today, much of the world's rare earth processing and separation capacity is concentrated overseas. Building more of this capability in the United States is important for strengthening domestic supply chains, reducing reliance on foreign processing, and supporting the advanced manufacturing, energy, technology, and national-security industries that depend on these materials.

The Freedom Facility will be designed to produce thousands of tons of separated rare earth oxides annually, making Rochester an important part of Phoenix Tailings' expansion of domestic rare earth processing capacity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze process chemistry, operating trends, and recovery results to identify performance gaps and recommend operating adjustments

  • Walk the circuit with operators to troubleshoot process and equipment issues and translate findings into clear field direction

  • Plan and run or coordinate test work to evaluate separation performance and validate proposed process changes

  • Develop and maintain mass and energy balances, process flow diagrams, and operating procedures that support consistent plant performance

  • Support commissioning and startup by evaluating process results and providing technical guidance to control room and field operators

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field

  • Knowledge of chemical separations, mass and energy balances, and process chemistry; familiarity with solvent extraction, leaching, or precipitation is highly valued

  • Hands-on experience with process equipment, experiments, or technical troubleshooting through internships, co-ops, research, or industry roles

  • Ability to analyze operating and experimental data using Excel or similar tools, prepare clear process documentation, and explain recommended changes to operators
