Job Description
The Windows Systems Administrator II/III will serve as a key member of the infrastructure team with a primary focus on supporting and expanding the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environment. Due to increased demand from research initiatives and remote users, this role will be responsible for the administration, troubleshooting, optimization, and growth of the Omnissa Horizon platform supporting remote desktop and application delivery. The ideal candidate will possess strong Windows systems administration fundamentals while also having hands-on experience designing, building, configuring, and supporting enterprise VDI solutions. This individual should understand the complete virtualization stack and be comfortable managing and expanding VDI environments from the ground up.
- Install, configure, and maintain Windows operating systems on physical and virtual servers and desktops
- Perform system upgrades, migrations, and lifecycle management activities
- Build, manage, and support virtual machines and virtual desktop infrastructure based on organizational needs
- Monitor system health and performance; recommend hardware and software improvements
- Troubleshoot and resolve system, application, and hardware issues
- Support users and systems by coordinating with IT teams to integrate shared services
- Implement and maintain security best practices across computing environments
- Package software and manage automated, remote deployments
- Maintain detailed technical documentation and operational procedures
- Stay current with emerging technologies related to systems administration and virtualization
- Provide technical guidance, training, and oversight to junior system administrators
- Support advanced research computing infrastructure used by faculty and researchers
- Work within a fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities and externally driven deadlines
- Occasionally work in data center environments, including lifting equipment up to 40 pounds
Skills and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (HR approval required)
- 4+ years of Hands-on experience administering Windows operating systems in physical and virtual environments
- Strong understand of Windows Server Administration (AD, Group Policy, User and Security Admin)
- Ability to design, build, expand, and support VDI environments, not just provide end-user support
- Needs to understand the underlying virtualization technologies and architecture
- Experience with Omnissa Horizon (formerly VMware Horizon) or a comparable VDI platform
- Any experience working within a High Performance Computing environment
- Applicable certifications
