Responsibilities
The ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) Specialist operates and maintains the ECMO circuit and equipment for patients requiring long-term pulmonary or cardiac support. The Specialist functions independently following standing ECMO orders and parameters while under the direction of the ECMO Physician and ECMO Coordinator. The Specialist will incorporate all members of the health care team in the planning and delivery of care to the patient, demonstrate expertise in caring for patients with multiple or complex conditions by monitoring the patient’s status and ECMO circuit, maintain the ECMO pump and manage the ECMO patient, assume responsibility for identifying and correcting problems associated with any ECMO procedures, and provide ECMO services as ordered by an ECMO physician in accordance with established policies, procedures and guidelines. The ECMO Specialist is responsible for following ECMO policies and procedures in patient care.
This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Holders of F1 status eligible for post-completion OPT are welcome to apply. This role is NOT eligible to participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program. Successful sponsorship will require state licensure and completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
Qualifications
A candidate for the position of ECMO Specialist must have a minimum of one year ICU or Critical Care experience as a Registered Nurse or Respiratory Therapist. Two years of ICU/Critical Care experience preferred. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Experience working in a team environment. Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends. Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting. Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.
-Registered Nurse Specifics:
Graduate of a baccalaureate Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program. If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by ACEN or CCNE, at least one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is required. Current RN license by applicable state requirements. Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required. PALS must be obtained prior to completion of orientation. BLS, ACLS, and PALS accepted from one of the following programs: American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
-Respiratory Therapist Specifics:
Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy or analogous 4 year degree. Current Minnesota Respiratory Therapist (LRT) license. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification. Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from one of the following programs: American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) where applicable. Additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
