Full job description
Jacobs is seeking an accomplished Senior Experiential / Environmental Graphic Designer based out of the United States, to join our growing design practice and work directly with the Director of Experiential Design on complex, high-visibility projects.
This position is ideal for a multidisciplinary designer who understands that successful environmental graphic requires the ability to translate the entire lifecycle of physical design. The ideal candidate can look at a set of architectural drawings and understand not only where a sign goes, but why it belongs there, what information it needs to communicate, how it should look, how it should be fabricated, how it will be installed, and how it will function for the person using the building. You should be comfortable moving between the creative and technical sides of design.
This is a hands-on senior design position with significant opportunity to influence the development of projects and the evolution of the Experiential Design practice.
Success will be measured not simply by the quality of individual drawings, but by the ability to consistently deliver thoughtful, buildable, technically sound, and visually compelling design solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Creative Development
-
Translate client objectives, brand standards, architectural environments, and user requirements into compelling physical design solutions.
-
Develop concepts, design studies, presentations, material palettes, color strategies, typography systems, and environmental applications.
-
Develop both 2D and 3D design solutions that communicate design intent clearly to clients, project teams, and fabricators.
-
Balance aesthetics, functionality, constructability, budget, code requirements, and long-term durability.
Signage & Wayfinding
-
Participate in programming, sign-family development, location planning, message development, typography, graphic standards, and design intent documentation.
-
Analyze circulation, pedestrian and vehicular movement, decision points, sightlines, architectural conditions, and user experience.
-
Apply accessibility and code requirements to design solutions, including ADA-related considerations.
-
Assist with development and implementation of signage standards and guidelines for complex facilities and multi-site environments.
Technical Design & Documentation
-
Produce high-quality design documentation, schedules, specifications, and design intent packages. Knowledge of sign fabrication is a must.
-
Coordinate design information with architecture, interiors, engineering, lighting, landscape, branding, and other disciplines.
-
Identify constructability issues before they become field problems.
-
Support value engineering and cost-conscious design without compromising the essential design intent.
Fabrication & Implementation
-
Apply practical knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, fabrication methods, finishes, installation, and field conditions.
-
Collaborate with fabricators and specialty contractors to develop solutions that are both visually sophisticated and realistically buildable.
-
Participate in fabrication reviews, mock-up reviews, site observations, punch walks, and installation reviews as appropriate.
-
Understand the relationship between design intent, fabrication tolerances, material selection, installation conditions, and final appearance.
Project & Client Collaboration
-
Work directly with the Director of Experiential Design and senior project leadership.
-
Collaborate with architects, interior designers, engineers, contractors, fabricators, owners, and specialty consultants.
-
Participate in client meetings, presentations, workshops, site surveys, and project reviews.
-
Communicate design rationale clearly to both design professionals and non-design stakeholders.
-
Take ownership of assigned project components and deliver work with limited day-to-day supervision.
-
Mentor junior designers and help establish design quality and production standards within the team.
#LI-AC2
-
Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Environmental Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Industrial Design, or equivalent professional experience.
-
Minimum of 7 years of professional design experience, including environmental graphic design, experiential design, signage, wayfinding, branded environments, exhibits, or related disciplines.
-
Demonstrated experience taking projects from concept through documentation and implementation.
-
Experience with SketchUp or comparable 3D modeling software.
-
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud.
-
Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or comparable architectural documentation software.
-
Demonstrated understanding of fabrication processes, materials, finishes, and installation methods.
-
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
