Full job description
Software Engineer, Co-op Function Health · Navigating Care Team
This co-op program is currently open to Northeastern University students only.
The Role Function Health is building the most comprehensive health platform on the planet. The Navigating Care team is building a concierge doctor in your pocket. We build the underlying system that interprets member biology to provide clinically grounded planning and actions the way a doctor would. This is a high-impact role at the intersection of AI and healthcare. Your work won't land in a dashboard no one checks. It will land in the hands of members making high-stakes decisions about their health.
What You'll Work On You'll join a small team tackling real, high-impact problems at the core of the Navigating Care experience:
Clinical Reasoning Engine. Work on the system that interprets member biology to provide clinically grounded planning and actions. Turn lab results, biomarkers, and health data into personalized, doctor-quality recommendations.
Agentic Chat. Help build our AI doctor, a conversational experience that can reason about a member's health, answer questions, and guide them through next steps with the depth and care of a real physician.
Adherence Automation. Build systems that help members follow through on their health guidance. Design intelligent nudges, reminders, and follow-ups that adapt to each member's needs and progress.
What We're Looking For
- AI-native workflow. You already use LLMs as a daily tool to write, debug, and reason through problems. You know how to steer a model toward useful output and when to stop prompting and start thinking.
- Strong fundamentals in backend or full-stack development
- Interest in LLMs, agentic systems, and applied AI
- Comfortable working with APIs, data pipelines, and cloud environments (GCP experience is a plus, not a requirement)
- Curiosity about healthcare, clinical data, or how technology can improve health outcomes
- A bias toward making things simpler, not just adding more
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
