Software Engineer - College of Art and Design (CADTech) REMOTE OPPORTUNITY

Location: Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) - Rochester, NY (Remote Position).

Department: CAD Operations / CADTech

Position Overview

The College of Art and Design (CADTech) at RIT is seeking a Software Engineer to support high-availability web applications for faculty, staff, and students. Working within a collaborative IT and Operations team, you will maintain custom web apps and support the college's academic, research, and creative missions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Application Security, Patching & Maintenance: Proactively identify, test, and apply security patches, framework upgrades, and dependency updates across custom and legacy web applications. Audit codebases for vulnerabilities, enforce secure coding standards, and maintain the security and operational health of web servers and databases.

  • Documentation & Knowledge Base: Write and maintain detailed technical documentation, including system architecture diagrams, API specifications, deployment guides, security procedures, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Maintain strict version control and source code documentation standards.

  • Operational Support & Administration: Assist with managing CAD's public and internal web portals and support web technology integrations.

  • Testing: Design and implement comprehensive test suites. Include unit, integration, and regression testing to validate application stability, prevent breaking changes during system updates, and automate deployment pipelines.

Qualifications Required

  • Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) plus at least 1 year of direct experience (or co-op) in full-stack programming, web development, mobile applications, and database management.

  • Backend & Database: Proficiency in PHP/Laravel (or another modern Object-Oriented language) and relational databases (e.g., MySQL).

  • Frontend: Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript

  • Tools & Process: Experience with Git version control, continuous integration (CI), unit testing, and structured software testing workflows.

  • Core Competencies: Strong technical troubleshooting skills, excellent interpersonal communication, and the ability to translate user requirements into functional system designs.

Preferred

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field.

  • Experience with Linux server administration and command-line interfaces (CLI).

  • Exposure to containerization (Docker) and web servers (Apache2, NGINX).

  • Demonstrated experience writing technical documentation.
