Job Description

The Associate General Counsel is a senior attorney in the Office of the General Counsel who provides timely, practical, and strategic legal advice to university trustees, senior leaders, academic and administrative units, and affiliated entities. Reporting to the General Counsel or a designated Deputy General Counsel, the position manages a broad portfolio of legal matters in a complex, highly regulated environment and helps advance the university’s academic, research, health, business, student-life, and intercollegiate athletics missions. The Associate General Counsel works collaboratively across the institution, exercises sound independent judgment, manages risk without unnecessarily impeding innovation, and may supervise attorneys, legal professionals, outside counsel, or project teams.

  1. Juris Doctor degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association required.

  2. Must be a member in good standing of any U.S. state bar. If not currently admitted to the New Jersey State Bar, the successful candidate must obtain admission via reciprocity or examination within six (6) months of their start date.

  3. A minimum of four years of progressively responsible legal experience after law school in a law firm, government agency, corporate legal department, higher-education legal office, not-for-profit, or comparable setting required.

  4. Demonstrated experience independently managing complex matters and providing practical legal advice to senior leaders and sophisticated clients required.

  5. Substantial experience in one or more areas relevant to a university, such as higher education, athletics, employment, litigation and investigations, governance, research, privacy, intellectual property, real estate, or complex commercial transactions is preferred.

  6. Experience advising a large, decentralized, university or similarly complex nonprofit organization including advising boards, presidents, provosts, deans, or other executive leaders preferred.

  7. Experience with college athletics including NCAA Division I athletics, conference rules, or legal issues affecting student-athletes and collegiate sports preferred.

  1. Familiarity with the laws and regulatory environment of the New Jersey and the northeastern United States preferred and a demonstrated ability to learn new areas of law quickly, as needed.

  2. Excellent legal research, analysis, drafting, negotiation, counseling, and oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with both legal and nonlegal audiences.

  3. Excellent relationship-management skills with the ability to negotiate, collaborate and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, including being able to explain legal terms and recommend strategies to stakeholders.

  4. Demonstrated sound judgment, discretion, integrity, and ability to protect confidential and privileged information.

  5. Ability to manage competing priorities, respond effectively to urgent matters, collaborate across diverse functions, and work independently with limited supervision.

  6. Ability to work effectively in a diverse academic community.

  7. Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check. Candidates for hire will be required to sign a waiver authorizing the background check.
