Full job description

The Center for European and Mediterranean Studies in Arts and Science at New York University (CEMS/NYU) invites applicants for a Faculty Fellow position in the field of European Studies. The initial appointment will be for one year beginning September 1, 2027, renewable annually for a maximum of three years, pending administrative and budgetary approval.

CEMS/NYU seeks a scholar whose research and teaching explores current or recent European affairs and who specializes in one of the following disciplines: comparative European politics, international relations, sociology, or contemporary European history. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching focus on the European Union; political, economic, and social developments in contemporary Europe; populist politics and democratic backsliding; European foreign affairs or Global Europe; or topics that expand the boundary of European Studies thematically or geographically. Experience advising student research is strongly preferred. Candidates should also demonstrate through their application materials a commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and excellence in teaching.

Responsibilities include teaching a total of three courses per year (graduate and/or undergraduate), often including a graduate research methods seminar. Student advising is a key component of this position, as the faculty fellow will have a significant role in directing theses for master’s students and the possibility of advising undergraduate honors majors. Service to the program includes organizing events that feature Europe (seminars that bring in outside scholars, for instance) and can involve representing the Center at university occasions and committee meetings.

Arts & Science at NYU is at the heart of a leading research university that spans the globe. We seek scholars of the highest caliber who are sensitive to the needs of and possess an interest in working in a broad academic community with different viewpoints and backgrounds. NYU affirms the value of differing perspectives on the world as we strive to build the strongest possible university with the widest reach. To learn more about the Arts & Science commitment to inclusive excellence, please read here: https://as.nyu.edu/departments/facultyexcellence.html.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $60,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Candidates should have completed their Ph.D. no earlier than 2022 and no later than August 1, 2027.

To apply, please submit a cover letter (including research interests and teaching experience), CV, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample.

Applications should be submitted through Interfolio.
