Job Summary

Leads and oversees YMCA Camp Orkila's summer camp operations, providing strategic direction, operational management, and leadership for seasonal programs and staff teams. Responsible for ensuring exceptional program quality, camper and family experiences, staff development, safety, and operational excellence across all aspects of the summer camp program. Oversees recruitment, hiring, onboarding, development, and supervision of staff, ensuring departments are well-positioned to meet enrollment, program quality, and performance goals. Provides coaching, leadership, and performance management to foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performing team culture. Provides year-round leadership and support for Camp Orkila's school, family, and outdoor education programs, as well as challenge courses and program areas. Supports the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of camp operations to ensure high-quality participant experiences and alignment with YMCA of Greater Seattle goals and standards. HIRING RANGE: $ 80,168.40-85,000/Annually (DOE)

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Supervises the operations of Camp Orkila's summer programs, ensuring all activities are delivered safely, effectively, and in alignment with YMCA association quality standards, established policies, and operating procedures.

  2. Oversees the recruitment, hiring, development and supervision of staff to ensure successful enrollment goals and processes are met within departments. Provides leadership and appraises performance.

  3. Oversee program quality and other impact measurements and deliverables within department.

  4. Supports recruitment and enrollment efforts and cultivates strong relationships with YMCA branches and community partners.

  5. Assists the Camp Executive Director in the financial development of Camp Orkila, including the annual campaign, and the funding of specific capital projects.

  6. Assists the Camp Executive Director in the cultivation of alumni including the identification of past campers, alumni record keeping, and the development of alumni correspondence.

  7. Oversees the Camper Support and Health Center programs, ensuring systems, resources, and interventions are in place to promote campers' physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.

  8. Champions equity, inclusion, and belonging across camp programs, policies, and practices, ensuring every camper, participant, volunteer, and employee experiences a welcoming environment where diverse backgrounds, identities, abilities, and perspectives are respected, valued, and supported.

  9. Oversees incident management and response processes, ensuring timely communication, documentation, follow-up, and continuous improvement.

  10. Supervises promotional event planning to assure a quality and professional outcome.

  11. In coordination with the Camp Executive Director, manages the branch budget process for summer camp department.

  12. Provides program data, analysis, and reports to support branch and Association planning, decision-making and goal setting.

  13. Works with camper families to build and strengthen positive relationships, promote and enact retention strategies, ensuring a high level of customer service and engagement. Responds to and supports the resolution of parent and customer concerns, complaints, and feedback in a timely, professional, and compassionate manner.

  14. In concert with the Camp Executive Director, gives leadership to branch long-range strategic planning and monitors performance and objectives.

  15. Supports the Camp Executive Director as a resource and by participating in various committees and groups. 16. Participate in a variety of internal meetings to maintain knowledge of industry requirements, support optimal customer care, and maintain team collaboration.

  16. Maintain required minimum qualifications for the position such as licenses, certifications, or credentials.

  17. Perform any tasks to assist in keeping a clean, safe, and efficient working environment.

  18. Integrate all safety policies and procedures into daily practice.

  19. Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and state and federal regulations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, human services, education, outdoor recreation, hospitality or equivalent.

  • Five years or more of progressively responsible experience in staff supervision, office management, budget development and monitoring.

  • Experience in marketing, public relations, hospitality and volunteer development. Must have an understanding of voluntary organizations.

  • Ability to assess financial and business needs and plan accordingly.

  • Knowledge of computer systems, including personal computers and applications.

  • Ability to act independently and to exercise discretion.

  • Ability to pass a criminal background and reference check per company policy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of camp operations and youth development programs, including waterfront and challenge course activities.

  • Extensive experience in human resources management, including oversight of J-1 Visa programs, international staff support, and employment compliance requirements.

  • Demonstrated experience leading operations within a camp, residential program, conference center, or other group living environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Role may require standing, walking, squatting, sitting, typing, bending, reaching, twisting, repetitive hand movements, and driving.

  • Hearing must be adequate to perform job duties in person, over the telephone, and in virtual meetings.

  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently in person, over the telephone, and in virtual meetings.

  • Visual acuity must be adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of information from printed sources and computer screens.

  • Must be able to remain stationary in a sitting or standing position up to 95% of the time.

  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move anywhere from 5 lbs. - 50 lbs.

  • Requires lifting above the shoulders

Regular Working Conditions:

  • This position will spend about 70% of the time in an indoor office environment.

  • Requires driving and other travel up to 10% of the time.

  • Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions.

  • This position will have frequent supervision.

  • The regular weekly schedule for this position will be as follows: May through September: Reside on Orcas Island at Camp Orkila and support summer camp operations. Because summer camp operates 24/7 during this period, the position requires regular evening, overnight, and weekend work to meet operational needs. October through April: Evening and weekend work will be required as needed to meet job responsibilities.

This position requires driving:

Driving Duties Requirement This role transports clients as an “authorized driver” for the YMCA of Greater Seattle (YGS) using an employer-provided vehicle. Driving duties for this role are Required. Driving roles are safety-sensitive. To become an authorized driver, you must be 21+, have possessed a driver's license for at least 3 years, and pass a drug screen that will test for impairing substances (including marijuana) in addition to meeting the driving record standards below:

YGS Driving Record Standards

Within the last three (3) years: No more than two (2) vehicle related suspension(s) and/or reinstatement(s). No more than two (2) moving violations and/or accidents. Moving violations include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Speeding

  • Improper Lane Change

  • Failure to Yield in Right-of-Way

  • Failure to Obey Traffic Signal

  • Failure to obey Traffic Sign

Within the last five (5) years: No Major Violations which include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • DUI, DWI, OUI, OWI, BUI (Boating), Administrative Per Se, or Refusing to Test

  • Driving with an open container of alcohol

  • Reckless Driving

  • Hit and Run – property damage only (Incidents resulting in injury fall under Permanent Disqualification)

  • Racing

  • Driving with a suspended/revoked license/insurance

  • Speeding over 20 mph

  • Fleeing and/or eluding police

  • Any other felony driving conviction(s)

Driving records that result in permanent disqualification from driving duties:

  • More than 3 DUI, DWI, OUI, OWI, BUI, Administrative Per Se, or Refusing to Test for entirety of driving history.

  • More than 3 Driving with a suspended/revoked license

  • Hit and Run resulting in bodily injury or death

  • Manslaughter/felony death by motor vehicle
