Sales & Use Accountant

Description

Our retail client seeking a detail-oriented Tax Compliance Accountant for a remote contract opportunity. This role will focus on sales and use tax compliance, business licensing, tax reconciliations, and multi-jurisdictional reporting requirements. The ideal candidate will bring strong indirect tax experience and a proven track record of supporting tax cleanup initiatives while ensuring compliance across multiple states and local jurisdictions.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain and update jurisdictional filing and reporting requirements, ensuring ongoing compliance with state and local tax regulations.

• Coordinate sales and use tax filings, payments, and registrations across multiple jurisdictions.

• Monitor nexus requirements and identify potential compliance risks.

• Oversee the collection, validation, and maintenance of customer resale and exemption certificates in partnership with Accounts Receivable and operational teams.

• Manage state and local business licenses, including renewals, new registrations, and licensing requirements associated with acquisitions or new locations.

• Support the timely processing and payment of real estate taxes.

• Coordinate responses to tax notices, audits, and regulatory inquiries, maintaining documentation and tracking outstanding matters through resolution.

• Reconcile sales and use tax liabilities between ERP records, tax filings, and payments.

• Prepare adjusting journal entries and supporting schedules as part of the month-end close process.

• Assist with tax remediation and cleanup projects to improve compliance, processes, and documentation.

Requirements

• Experience with sales and use tax compliance in a multi-state environment.

• Knowledge of business license management and state/local registration requirements.

• Experience supporting tax cleanup, remediation, or compliance improvement projects.

• Strong account reconciliation and month-end close skills.

• Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work independently.

Preferred

• Experience with Avalara.

• Experience with NetSuite.

• Exposure to tax audits, notices, and nexus reviews.

• Strong Excel and analytical skills.
