Summary
The position provides health coaching services for Veterans seeking self-directed, lasting changes aligned with their values. They provide interventions that promote health and wellness and enhance well-being, improve health related outcomes, reduce likelihood of inpatient admission, and improve quality of life. Health Coaches display unconditional positive regard for their Veterans and a belief in their capacity for change, and honor that each client is an expert on his or her life.
Duties
Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Responsible for the delivery of Whole Health Coaching, including provision of care through coaching and promotion and education regarding Whole Health Coaching to Veterans and staff. Supporting Veterans in navigating the Whole Health Journey, specifically through the Pathway, wellbeing, and Whole Health clinical care elements of the Whole Health System, as well as assisting in the collection of whole health qualitative data from Veterans and creation of reports analyzing effectiveness of health coaching. Provides care to Veterans seeking self-directed, lasting changes aligned with their values. They provide interventions that promote health and wellness and enhance well-being, improve health related outcomes, reduce likelihood of inpatient admission, and improve quality of life. Health Coaches work with Veterans on identifying the Veterans' motivation for change, determining goals for their work together, developing treatment plans to reach these goals, implementing those treatment plans, and assessing progress in order to adjust plans as necessary. Provide information on the relationship between lifestyle and health outcomes, exploring behaviors that increase the risk of developing or worsening chronic disease and those that reduce the likelihood of chronic illness. Support clients in mobilizing internal strengths and external resources and develops self-management strategies for making sustainable, healthy lifestyle behavior changes and more effectively managing chronic disease. Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. List of certifications. Candidates must be currently certified by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC). Exception for Non-Certified Health and Wellness Coaches. (a) Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for certification (completed NBHWC certified training for Health and Wellness Coaching), may be given a temporary appointment as Health and Wellness Coach under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c)(2). (c) Non-certified individuals may only be appointed at the entry level and may not be promoted until certification is obtained. (d) Temporary appointments of non-certified Health and Wellness Coaches may not be extended beyond one year or converted to a new temporary appointment. Basic Requirements: Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position AND hold board certification as a health and wellness coach (NBHWC). or Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field with completion of an NBHWC Health and Wellness Coach training course and/or NBHWC board certification. or Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field AND has completed an NBHWC Health & Wellness Coach training course and/or board certification from NBHWC. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Ability to Follow Oral Directions Attention to Detail Customer Service Flexibility Influencing/Negotiating Integrity/Honesty Interpersonal Skills Learning Quality Ranking Factor Reading Comprehension Self-Management Stress Tolerance Teamwork Technical Competence Veteran and Customer Focus Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Work is performed in an office setting with occasional visits to areas within the service as well as throughout the Healthcare system. Work areas are adequately lighted, heated, and air conditioned. The normal risks and discomforts typical of an office and clerical work area are included. There are no unusual risks or safety hazards associated with this position. Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
