Full job description

Overview

The Financial Assistant team builds the AI-powered experiences that help members understand their finances and make better decisions inside the Credit Karma app. We work at the application layer of AI: turning large language models, agentic workflows, and personalization signals into features members actually use.

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to serve as a technical leader on the team. You'll own the architecture and delivery of core Financial Assistant capabilities, set technical direction across multiple workstreams, and raise the engineering bar for how we build production AI products at scale. This is a hands-on role: you'll write code, make the hard design calls, and mentor engineers, while partnering closely with product, design, data science, and platform teams to ship AI experiences that are fast, reliable, and trustworthy.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the technical strategy and architecture for Financial Assistant, including LLM-backed features, agentic/orchestration flows, and personalization systems.

  • Lead design and delivery of complex, cross-team initiatives from ambiguous problem statements through production launch and iteration.

  • Write, review, and elevate the quality of production code across services and application logic; set patterns others build on.

  • Establish best practices for building with LLMs in production: prompt and context design, evaluation, latency and cost management, guardrails, and quality measurement.

  • Partner with product and design to translate member needs into technical roadmaps, and with data science and platform teams on model serving, data, and infrastructure dependencies.

  • Identify and resolve reliability, performance, and scalability risks before they reach members; contribute to incident response and operational excellence.

  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, and influence technical decisions and standards beyond your immediate team.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of leading the design and delivery of large-scale, high-impact systems.

  • Deep expertise in building and operating production services (strong proficiency in one or more of: TypeScript, Java, Scala, Python, or similar).

  • Experience building AI or ML-powered product features, ideally with LLMs, agentic systems, retrieval, or recommendation/personalization systems.

  • Strong system design skills and the ability to make sound architecture decisions under ambiguity and competing constraints.

  • Demonstrated technical leadership: setting direction, driving cross-functional alignment, and mentoring engineers without relying on formal authority.

  • Experience with production concerns for AI/ML systems: evaluation, latency and cost tradeoffs, monitoring, and quality/safety guardrails.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical tradeoffs to both engineering and non-technical partners.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
