Overview

The Histotechnician Jr will perform basic laboratory support tasks, such as assist in data recording, receive, label and store laboratory supplies. Will assist in receipt of samples, complete tracking documentation, disposal of tissue and fluid specimens, frozen sections, preparing solutions and working with chemicals and prepare materials for shipment and archiving among other duties.

Responsibilities

Register and accession specimens using the hospital and laboratory information systems; computer experience and good typing skills are necessary

Sample Handling

  • Labels and handles specimens in accordance with laboratory standards, and policies of using laboratory and hospital information systems.

  • Lab Testing / Data Entry / Time Management

  • Assists the pathologist and/or his designate with the setup, performance, and documentation of grossing procedures, utilizing the laboratory information system and the hospital information system as required.

  • Sample Handling

  • Prepares the Histopathology specimens for evaluation according to department procedures. Trains and assists with some technical duties in Histopathology.

  • Clerical

  • Maintains files of reports, diagnoses, correspondence, slides, documentation, and appropriate forms, and is able to retrieve such information routinely.

Stocking, clerical, computer, disposal of tissue and fluid specimens, cytology prep work, preparing solutions and working with chemicals.

Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent .

Equipment to be used in this position includes analytical laboratory equipment, laboratory processing equipment, and hospital and laboratory information systems . Experience with this equipment is not necessary .

Able to read, write and speak fluent English. Some heavy lifting and frequent lifting of weights up to 50 lbs. May be subjected to noise and disagreeable odors and will work with hazardous substances such as chemical and infectious biological materials.
