The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon offers a unique interdisciplinary program that enables you to develop imaginative solutions to real-world engineering problems. A postdoctoral researcher position is available at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at CMU. The work will focus on integrating AI agents into dynamic multi-modal transportation networks and supply chain networks. The postdoctoral researcher will lead funded research projects, supervise graduate research assistants, and write research proposals and reports.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Collect and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related fields to analyze the collected data.

  • Conduct research experiments within the predetermined research scope and methodology of department and university.

  • Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies may be required depending on area and specialty.

  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant writing.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Full-time, self-motivated, with a recent quantitative doctoral degree in Engineering or other related areas

  • A record of productivity

  • Enthusiastic about programming and mathematical modeling

  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Priorities will be given to candidates:

  • With working knowledge of at least one programming language, such as C++, Python, etc.

  • With working knowledge of Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA) and large-scale network simulation

  • Have a good understanding of machine learning theories and algorithms

  • With inter-disciplinary background

  • Starting in Fall 2026

Duration: this is a temporary full-time position with a minimum duration of 12 months, with an opportunity to extend the position to multiple years depending on performance and availability of funding.
