Job Summary

The Senior Counsel or Assistant General Counsel – Regulatory will work under the direction of and report to the Associate General – Regulatory, Generation, and Energy Services and provide legal support to AEP’s vertically integrated operating companies in the preparation and litigation of Integrated Resource Plans and Certificates of Public Convenience and Necessity, and similar proceedings, related to the development and acquisition of generating assets.

Job Description

What You'll Do:

  • Provide timely and appropriate legal advice regarding the legal interests of the Company. Review, analyze, and interpret laws, regulations, and judicial and administrative decisions and other legal materials affecting matters relating to Company operations and interests.

  • Review proposed legislation and regulations and provide input in the formulation of the Company's position through preparation of amended language and other documentation to support or oppose legislation and regulations.

  • Support each of the AEP vertically integrated operating companies (Appalachian Power Company, Indiana Michigan Power Company, Kentucky Power Company, Wheeling Power Company, Public Service Company of Oklahoma, and Southwestern Electric Power Company) in preparing and litigating Integrated Resource Plans and Certificates of Public Convenience and Necessity, and similar proceedings, before each company’s respective state regulatory commission.

  • Align work with the goals of the AEP Legal Department; work with other in-house and outside counsel on legal matters; participate in the management of outside legal resources as necessary.

  • Possess comprehensive knowledge of AEP’s competitive positions, goals, and objectives and how legal decisions impact the operating companies and the American Electric Power Service Corporation’s business units; provide legal services to reduce legal and regulatory risk, while supporting the operating company’s or business unit’s objectives.

  • Demonstrate the highest standards of ethical behavior and support the Company's Principles of Business Conduct.

  • Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

What We're Looking For:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctorate.

Experience:

  • Eight plus years of experience as a practicing regulatory attorney in private practice or in a corporate legal department.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Active license to practice law in at least one of the AEP vertically integrated operating company jurisdictions (VA, WV, IN, OK, LA) or Ohio.

Other Must Haves:

  • Ability to promote teamwork and build relationships within the team get work accomplished .

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently of direct supervision.

Where You'll Work:

  • On-Site in Columbus, OH; Charleston, WV; Ft. Wayne, IN; Indianapolis, IN; Oklahoma City, OK; Tulsa, OK; Richmond, VA; or Shreveport, LA.

Compensation Grade:

Compensation Range:

$160,434.00 - $245,080.00

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: S – Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently.
