Full job description

The Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies of New York University invites applications for a tenured full-time senior faculty position in Sephardic Studies, at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor. The appointment will begin on September 1, 2027, pending administrative and budgetary approval. The appointee is expected to have a doctorate in a field related to Sephardic Studies and a significant record of scholarly publications based on original research. Specialization is open, but all candidates should work primarily in the modern period (beginning in 1500) on the study of Jewish communities in or contact with the Mediterranean, North Africa, the geographical regions covered by the Ottoman Empire, the Americas, Europe, and/or Asia. The appointee is expected to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We welcome applicants from any discipline with a particular eye toward candidates who connect with and complement the strengths in Hebrew and Judaic Studies and other departments or programs in Arts and Science at NYU.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $110,000 to $170,000 at the rank of Associate Professor and $135,000 to $225,000 at the rank of Full Professor. Doctorate in a field related to Sephardic Studies.

A significant record of scholarly publications based on original research.

Work primarily in the modern period (beginning in 1500) on the study of Jewish communities in or contact with the Mediterranean, North Africa, the geographical regions covered by the Ottoman Empire, the Americas, Europe, and/or Asia.

Ability to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

(1) Cover letter that describes research and teaching experience and how the applicant would contribute to widening, deepening, and strengthening the scholarly strengths of Hebrew and Judaic Studies and NYU more generally

(2) Curriculum vitae

(3) One sample syllabus of a previously taught course

(4) A writing sample from a recently published work (25-50 pages)
