Overview
GovCIO is currently hiring for a Senior ServiceNow CMDB Specialist with an active Secret clearance responsible for the end-to-end architecture, implementation, and long-term maturation of the enterprise Configuration Management Database (CMDB). This position is located in Arlington, VA and is a hybrid position.
Responsibilities
This role places the ServiceNow CMDB at the center of the IT operational framework, establishing it as the single, authoritative source of truth for the entire IT environment. This role translates technical infrastructure dependencies into business-aligned services using ServiceNow's Common Service Data Model (CSDM), configures automated Discovery mechanisms, and builds robust governance models to ensure data integrity. This operational, strategic, and highly collaborative role ensures the CMDB evolves continuously alongside the organization's business needs.
Core Responsibilities & Performance Expectations:
- Technical Architecture & Instantiation
-
Own the technical design, schema configuration, and instantiation of the ServiceNow CMDB, ensuring strict alignment with industry best practices and organizational data standards.
-
Define, standardize, and maintain Configuration Item (CI) classes, attributes, and relationship types within the ServiceNow platform.
-
Architect and implement multi-source data ingestion pipelines, leveraging ServiceNow IntegrationHub, Service Graph Connectors, and the Robust Transform Engine (RTE) to unify disparate data streams.
- CSDM Architecture & ITSM Integration
-
Govern the deployment of the Common Service Data Model (CSDM) across all four domains (Foundation, Design, Manage Technical Services, and Sell/Consume) to support true service-aware operations.
-
Integrate CMDB data structures with core ITSM processes (Incident, Problem, Change, and Release Management) to enable automated risk assessments, accelerated root-cause analysis, and proactive impact modeling.
-
Design and maintain automated service maps using Service Mapping capabilities to illustrate relationships between underlying infrastructure and consumer-facing applications.
- Discovery Engineering & Data Integrity
-
Engineer, configure, and scale automated ServiceNow Discovery across complex hybrid cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP) and on-premise environments.
-
Manage and optimize MID Server architecture, credential stores, and custom discovery patterns to maximize visibility and eliminate infrastructure blind spots.
-
Configure and enforce the ServiceNow Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE) to govern data priorities, prevent CI duplication, and automatically resolve ingestion conflicts.
- IT Environment Maturation & Governance
-
Drive continuous IT environment maturity by defining, tracking, and reporting CMDB health metrics (Completeness, Correctness, and Compliance) through data certification tasks.
-
Establish lifecycle governance processes for CIs from procurement through decommissioning to eliminate orphaned data and prevent "configuration drift."
-
Author technical documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and configuration management plans to formalize CMDB processes across the enterprise.
-
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Interactions.
The Senior ServiceNow CMDB Specialist operates at the intersection of infrastructure, development, and business operations. Key interfaces include:
-
IT Asset Management (ITAM) Teams: Partner closely to align the CMDB with Hardware Asset Management (HAM) and Software Asset Management (SAM) modules, ensuring logical CIs map cleanly to financial and physical assets for compliance audits.
-
Hardware Asset Management (HAM) Team: Collaborate closely to reconcile the physical lifecycle of hardware assets with the logical lifecycle of Configuration Items (CIs). You will ensure that the HAM module automatically triggers status and relationship updates in the CMDB for physical deployments, location transfers, and secure disposals to maintain audit readiness.
-
Software Asset Management (SAM) Team: Partner to map discovered software installations and cloud resource usage directly to software models, entitlements, and license allocations. You will establish robust discovery patterns and data structures that allow the SAM team to track installations accurately, calculate compliance, and optimize software spend across the enterprise.
-
IT Service Management (ITSM) Process Owners: Collaborate with Incident, Problem, and Change Managers to design workflows that leverage CMDB relationships, optimizing the impact analysis of scheduled changes and reducing Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR).
-
Infrastructure & Cloud Engineering Teams (Network, Systems, CloudOps): Coordinate with engineers to maintain proper discovery credentials, troubleshoot MID Server access, and validate that new cloud or physical deployments are captured accurately.
-
Application Owners & Business Stakeholders: Interview and advise business leaders to map critical application dependencies, translating technical architecture into the business service context required for executive visibility.
-
ServiceNow Development & Platform Teams: Work in tandem with platform architects to ensure CMDB updates, patch upgrades, and schema modifications preserve overall platform health and align with global development cycles.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
-
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field with 15+ years (or commensurate experience)
-
Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in IT Infrastructure or IT Service Management.
-
Minimum of 2 years of dedicated, hands-on experience administering and engineering within a ServiceNow environment, specifically focused on the CMDB.
Clearance: Required Active Secret clearance with ability to obtain and hold DEA suitability
Technical Knowledge:
-
Advanced technical proficiency in ServiceNow Discovery, Service Mapping, and CSDM execution.
-
Strong understanding of data integration methodologies (REST/SOAP APIs, JSON, XML, SQL, and ETL tools).
-
Comprehensive knowledge of enterprise IT architecture, including networking protocols, virtualization, databases, and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
Required & Preferred Certifications:
-
ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA) (Required)
-
ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist – Discovery (CIS-Discovery) (Highly Preferred)
-
ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist – Hardware Asset Management (CIS-HAM) or Software Asset Management (CIS-SAM) (Preferred)
-
ITIL v4 Foundation Certification (Preferred)
