Full job description

Description

Amazon is building the next generation of multi-purpose robotics systems, and scaling from prototype to production. We are looking for an experienced Test Lab Manager to play a key leadership role in proving robots are ready for deployment. This is a chance to join a growing System Verification and Validation team at a pivotal moment and build a lab organization from the ground up. You will own the processes that keep our hardware and physical system test environments running, and you will directly shape how we verify and validate the next generation of Amazon robotics.

As a Test Lab Manager, you will lead a multidisciplinary team of infrastructure, operations, and maintenance staff spanning multiple lab locations that support hardware and physical system testing. Your team runs tests and experiments, operates and maintains test fixtures, lab equipment, control systems, and motion capture systems, coordinates test intake and scheduling, and keeps test uptime high through proactive and corrective maintenance. You will be responsible for standing up new lab spaces, establishing the processes and systems that manage incoming test demand, and growing and developing the team as the lab footprint expands. If you are energized by leading hands-on technical teams, building operational excellence into a scaling organization, and enabling robotics verification and validation, we want to hear from you.

Key job responsibilities

  • Lead execution of hardware and physical system test and experimentation campaigns across multiple lab locations, ensuring tests are run safely, on schedule, and with high-quality data in support of verification and validation goals.

  • Partner with cross-functional project groups—hardware, software, systems, and quality engineering teams—to understand test requirements, plan lab capacity, and support experimentation from setup through data collection and review.

  • Build and own test request intake and management processes and systems, standardizing how test demand is submitted, prioritized, scheduled, and tracked across sites.

  • Provide visibility into lab testing activities, capacity, and equipment availability by developing dashboards and reporting that help stakeholders track test status, utilization, and throughput across sites.

  • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary lab team (infrastructure, controls, operations, and maintenance staff) across multiple test lab locations, providing coverage across shifts and on-call rotations.

  • Own the operation, availability, and uptime of test environments, fixtures, lab equipment, control systems (PLC, I/O), motion capture systems, and environmental test chambers.

  • Establish and continuously improve lab operational processes, SOPs, and documentation to enable safe, repeatable, and high-throughput testing.

  • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs for lab equipment and electro-mechanical systems to maximize test readiness.

  • Stand up new lab spaces, coordinating equipment sourcing, installation, calibration, and onboarding of staff to bring labs online on schedule.

  • Ensure safety compliance and manage lab safety protocols specific to robotics hardware testing (e.g., gantry interlocks, robot safety devices, lockout procedures).

A day in the life

You might start your morning reviewing the test request queue and the day's schedule across your lab sites, reallocating staff to keep high-priority verification campaigns on track. You could spend part of the day running a hardware test campaign alongside a cross-functional project team, then work with your controls engineers to resolve an issue with an automated test cell. In the afternoon you might refine your test intake process based on feedback from engineering partners, review a dashboard of lab utilization to rebalance capacity, and coach a team member stepping into a new area of ownership. Throughout, you will remove bottlenecks, improve processes, and keep your labs running safely and reliably.

About the team

We are a growing System Verification and Validation organization building the lab infrastructure that validates robotic hardware and physical systems across multiple dimensions of performance and reliability as we scale from prototype to production. This Test Lab Manager role will lead the first dedicated lab engineering organization on the team, spanning multiple sites and disciplines. If you want to help build a lab organization from the ground up and leave your mark on the next generation of Amazon robotics, this is the team to join.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience in engineering team management

  • Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field

  • 7+ years of experience in technical lab, robotics, electro-mechanical, or automation environments, including operating, testing, and maintaining equipment

  • 3+ years of experience leading or managing technical teams or lab/test operations

  • Experience planning and executing hardware or physical system test or experimentation campaigns in partnership with cross-functional engineering teams

  • Experience managing lab resources, equipment, supplies, and operational processes across one or more lab environments

  • Experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and maintaining electro-mechanical systems, control systems (e.g., PLC, I/O), or lab equipment

  • Experience interpreting engineering documentation, including CAD, drawings, schematics, equipment specifications, test procedures, and/or Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Experience with project management of technical projects, including scheduling, tracking, and documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Python and/or C++ programming

  • Master's degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related field

  • Experience managing robotics, mechatronics, or system-level test labs across multiple physical locations

  • Experience designing and implementing test request intake, prioritization, and scheduling systems or workflows

  • Experience standing up new lab or test spaces, including equipment sourcing, installation, and calibration

  • Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting optical motion capture systems (e.g., OptiTrack, Vicon, or similar platforms)

  • Experience with automated test equipment and control systems, including motion control, vision/tracking for gantry systems, environmental test chambers, and OPC/UA integration

  • Experience developing teams and growing technical staff, including mentorship and shift/on-call coverage planning

  • Experience communicating with users, technical teams, and management to collect requirements, evaluate alternatives, and develop supporting processes and tools
