Scope of Job

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley seeks applications for an Assistant Professor in Percussion to join the School of Music beginning Fall 2027. Primary responsibilities include teaching applied lessons, chamber music, percussion methods and percussion literature/pedagogy courses; recruiting, mentoring, and advising percussion students, and other duties as appropriate to the candidate’s qualifications and interests (such as teaching Jazz related courses/ensembles) as assigned by the School of Music Director.

The successful candidate will be expected to work in conjunction with the other percussion faculty in maintaining and developing the percussion studio. This includes recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students. They will also develop and maintain a strong regional, national, and international profile as a performer and educator. As tenure track faculty, the candidate should expect to maintain a regional/national/international profile as a performer and scholar.

This position requires close collaboration with School of Music faculty and includes instructional responsibilities on both the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses. The successful candidate will carry the standard academic teaching load appropriate for an assistant professor appointment.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctor of Musical Arts ( DMA ) in Percussion, from an accredited university. Applicants will be considered if the degree will be completed by July 1, 2027.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success in teaching.

  • Documented experience and accomplishments in percussion performance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A record of successful teaching at the college/university level.

  • Jazz Studies experience/qualification preferred but not required.

  • Experience with recruitment, including on and off campus activities

License or Certification Required?No

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
