The Role and Why It's Important As the Area Human Resources Manager at Hy-Vee, you'll be the HR partner for multiple retail locations, helping stores attract, develop, and retain great people. From recruiting and onboarding to payroll, employee relations, and compliance, your work directly supports the teams that serve our customers every day. You'll work closely with store management to build a culture where employees feel valued and supported. What You'll Do No two days are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Deliver prompt, friendly, and caring service to employees and managers across multiple store locations

  • Manage the full talent acquisition process including sourcing, drug testing, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding

  • Counsel store management and employees on performance reviews, scheduling, benefits, wages, and employee relations matters

  • Handle investigation, documentation, and resolution of employee issues, concerns, and conflicts

  • Coordinate longevity and retention programs and facilitate employee transfers between stores

  • Conduct stay and exit interviews and attend store management meetings

  • Process payroll and manage adjustments including special pay and missed pay raises

  • Prepare employee wage and employment verifications

  • Serve as Insurance Coordinator and Leave of Absence Coordinator

  • Record and follow up on Workers Compensation claims and complete accident reports for both property damage and personal injuries

  • Ensure all employment practices comply with federal, state, and local regulations

  • Compile and analyze employment data to support strategic planning

  • Coordinate quarterly employee meetings and store events such as holiday and seasonal parties

  • Assist customers in the store with finding products, reaching items, and enhancing their shopping experience as needed

  • Maintain compliance with Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all company policies

  • Assist in other areas as needed and take on special projects as assigned

  • You'll receive direction and support from: Store Director, Talent Supervisor, Director of Human Resources, and Vice President of Human Resources

Your Skills To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:

  • Build strong relationships and communicate effectively in writing and verbally with employees and leadership

  • Manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Interview, counsel, and advise employees and managers with professionalism and discretion

  • Compile and analyze HR data to inform decisions and planning

  • Use basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • Handle confidential employee records and sensitive information with strict discretion

  • High school diploma plus 2 to 3 years of HR or related coursework required; Hy-Vee experience preferred

Reporting Relationships Accountable and Reports to: Store Director, Talent Supervisor, Director of Human Resources, and Vice President of Human Resources Direct Reports: All other store positions and any assigned by Store Director

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma plus 2 to 3 years of HR or related coursework required

  • Hy-Vee experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Physical activity is incidental to the core duties of the role

  • Occasionally walk the floor or facility to observe operations, staff, or product

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to occasionally handle product for demonstration purposes

  • No regular lifting, carrying, or physical exertion required

​ Working Environment This role is performed across multiple store locations on a daily basis in a fast-paced environment. You may occasionally encounter exposure to cleaning chemicals or solvents.
