Full job description

Description We are looking for a Credit & Collections Specialist to support accounts receivable performance for a wholesale distribution organization in Houston, Texas. This contract opportunity is ideal for a detail-oriented candidate who can balance credit evaluation, collections activity, and customer account resolution while maintaining strong internal and external relationships. The person in this role will manage a high-volume portfolio, help reduce aging balances, and make informed credit decisions that support both risk management and customer service.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a sizable portfolio of customer accounts by following up on past-due balances and driving timely payment resolution.

  • Investigate billing questions, payment discrepancies, and disputed charges, then coordinate with customers and internal teams to bring accounts into balance.

  • Review new and existing customer accounts to assess creditworthiness, establish appropriate terms, and recommend credit limits based on available financial and trade information.

  • Maintain accurate documentation related to account status, collection activity, risk exposure, and incomplete credit files.

  • Partner with branch personnel and sales teams to address account concerns, support customer relationships, and encourage payment within agreed terms.

  • Monitor orders placed on credit hold and take timely action to release eligible transactions while communicating clearly on delinquent account status.

  • Apply company credit policies and established guidelines when evaluating exposure, reviewing applications, and managing higher-risk or more complex accounts.

  • Contact customers regarding overdue invoices and negotiate practical next steps to secure payment and reduce receivable aging. Requirements • 5 to 7 years of experience in credit, collections, or commercial accounts receivable functions.

  • Background in commercial credit analysis and collections within a business-to-business environment.

  • Ability to evaluate credit applications, interpret trade references, and make sound account risk decisions.

  • Experience reconciling customer accounts and resolving invoice disputes with accuracy and professionalism.

  • Strong working knowledge of credit and collections processes, including order release and delinquency management.

  • Proficiency with Prophet 21 is preferred.

  • Associate degree or technical certification may be helpful, depending on business needs.

  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with sales, branch teams, and customers.
