Full job description

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics (https://www.me.upenn.edu/) within the School of Engineering and Applied Science (https://www.seas.upenn.edu/) (SEAS) at the University of Pennsylvania seeks outstanding applicants for a tenure-track or tenured position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level.

The Department seeks individuals with a record of, or exceptional promise for, research achievement, a dedication to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, and a commitment to building our scholarly community. A candidate's research must be centered in mechanical engineering, and their teaching interests should align with the Department's core educational programs.

We are particularly interested in applicants working in the broad areas of fluid mechanics and thermal sciences, including research with applications in aerospace, human health and physiological flows, manufacturing, thermal management for electronics and computing, energy, and the environment. We welcome candidates advancing computational and experimental methods, including multiscale simulation, AI-enabled modeling of physical systems, transformative flow and thermal measurement approaches, and autonomous experimentation.

The Department has grown substantially in recent years and is positioned to expand its impact as part of the Penn Engineering 2030 Strategic Plan (https://www.engineering.upenn.edu/about/strategic-plan/) . Our faculty collaborate with researchers across the University and benefit from engagements with leading research centers (https://research.engineering.upenn.edu/centers-institutes/) . We encourage applications from candidates who will contribute to, and benefit from, this vibrant interdisciplinary environment.

Penn Engineering strongly supports dual-career couples, and we welcome and encourage inquiries about dual career assistance (for academic and non-academic opportunities) at an early stage of the recruitment process.

The anticipated start date is July 1, 2027, or a later mutually agreed to date.

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline by the start date.

Applications are required to be submitted online through Interfolio (https://apply.interfolio.com/193932) , and include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement (1-2 pages), research statement (2-3 pages), and names and contact information of 3 references. Candidates will be contacted before references are requested. For full consideration, please apply by December 4, 2026.

Candidates are considered for employment without regard to race, color, sex, sexual orientation, religion, creed, national origin (including shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics), citizenship status, age, disability, veteran status or any class protected under applicable federal, state, or local law.
