Job Description

This part-time Production Operator role takes place in a fast-paced, climate-controlled cleanroom environment, supporting final inspection and quality control for silicon wafer manufacturing. You will follow detailed procedures, operate automated and robotic equipment, and ensure that polished wafers meet precise customer specifications. The position involves working 12-hour night shifts, three days per week, and requires strong attention to detail, multitasking ability, and a high commitment to safety and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Perform final inspection and quality control tasks for silicon wafers in a fast-paced production environment.

  • Follow complex, detailed procedures and complete all required documentation accurately and on time to meet daily production targets without defects.

  • Ensure wafers are processed according to specific customer requirements using computerized and paper work orders.

  • Operate robotic and automated equipment to load and unload material, transport carts of wafers, and handle wafers, tools, and related equipment.

  • Review work orders, load material onto the appropriate tool sets, and select and load the correct recipes according to customer specifications.

  • Verify that lot numbers on work orders match lot numbers on box labels at the load and unload of each operation.

  • Count wafers in each box at load and unload to confirm quantities match the work order and box label.

  • Set up tools for each box by verifying that the recipe matches the work order and that the correct lot number is scanned into the computer systems.

  • Ensure wafer cassettes are placed properly on tools at the designated station and position to avoid robotic malfunctions, scrapped wafers, and exposure to chemical or mechanical hazards.

  • Perform daily calibrations on each process tool and verify that all calibrations meet process specifications before releasing the tool to production.

  • Continuously monitor, analyze, and verify process data to ensure all operations meet quality and order specifications before moving orders to the next process step.

  • Respond to and troubleshoot tool alarms to minimize downtime and protect product quality.

  • Perform visual inspections of wafers and packaging to identify flipped wafers, color variations, laser mark orientation, particles, scratches, smudges, pen marks, and alignment issues.

  • Verify packaging specifications using computerized work orders and visual guides, including checking label placement and date/time stamp validity.

  • Clean equipment and work areas to meet cleanroom and 5S standards.

  • Follow all documented training, procedures, and processes to maintain quality and cleanroom standards.

  • Report and act to prevent variations, errors, or lapses in quality, ensuring issues are documented, corrected, and not repeated.

  • Identify and communicate suggestions for process or quality improvements to appropriate personnel.

  • Complete all tasks using safe work practices, placing safety ahead of deadlines or other goals.

  • Model safe behaviors for co-workers and remain highly cautious when working near moving mechanical parts and hazardous chemicals.

  • Use a computer, keyboard, and monitor to input data into Excel, track and confirm each process step, and complete computerized forms.

  • Use common office and communication tools such as calculators, copiers, phones, and email software to support production and documentation.

  • Communicate effectively in English with supervisors and team members, and read and write instructions, procedures, manuals, reports, and correspondence.

  • Stand and walk for extended periods during 12-hour shifts while performing production and inspection tasks.

  • Move boxes of wafers between inventory locations, transport carts, and automated process equipment by bending, stooping, squatting, lifting, and reaching as needed.

  • Push, pull, and guide transport carts through doorways and hallways, including carts that may weigh up to approximately 400 pounds.

  • Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly while moving materials and operating equipment.

  • Perform repetitive opening and closing of wafer cassettes at waist level and place them on carts at each process step.

  • Carry out repetitive hand and wrist movements during packaging and sealing of finished product.

  • Use fine motor skills to handle wafers and wafer cassettes carefully, ensuring they do not contact the cleanroom uniform, gloves, or mechanical equipment.

  • Hand-pour specified quantities of chemicals into manual clean lines, test lines with chemical test strips, and operate around hazardous and volatile chemicals safely.

  • Work cooperatively in close proximity with team members or independently in designated areas as needed.

  • Maintain reliable attendance and adhere to advance notice and call-in policies for absences in the manufacturing area.

  • Perform basic arithmetic calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and decimals, using a calculator, Excel, or similar tools.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to work part-time 12-hour night shifts (6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.), three days per week, on an alternating weekly schedule.

  • Strong multitasking ability to monitor wafers on multiple pieces of automated machinery simultaneously.

  • High attention to detail and accuracy in inspection, documentation, and data entry.

  • Capability to follow complex, detailed written and verbal procedures consistently.

  • Comfort using computers, reading computer screens, and entering data into systems such as Excel and other software.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English with management and co-workers.

  • Ability to read and write in English, including instructions, procedures, manuals, reports, and correspondence.

  • Physical ability to stand and walk for long periods during a 12-hour shift.

  • Physical ability to bend, stoop, squat, lift, and reach to move boxes of wafers and related materials.

  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

  • Ability to push carts on wheels weighing from approximately 20 pounds up to about 400 pounds.

  • Fine motor skills for careful handling of wafers and wafer cassettes.
