Position Summary Under the direction of engineers of a higher grade, the incumbents of this position assist in the preparation of Live Load Capacity for bridges of normal complexity, using AASHTO and MassDOT standards and assist in the preparation and review or rating reports for these bridges. They also assist in the performance of Overload Capacity calculations of bridges of normal to moderate complexity using AASHTO and MassDOT standards including preparation and review of overload reports and memos for these bridges. Duties and Responsibilities * Assists with elements of the performance of Live Load Capacity calculations of bridges of normal complexity using AASHTO specifications as well as MassDOT Standards and provides data for rating reports of these bridges. * Confirms accuracy of calculations prepared by consultants related to Live Load Capacity of bridges of normal complexity using AASHTO specifications and reviews rating reports for these bridges. * Assists with elements of the performance of Overload Capacity calculations of bridges of normal to moderate complexity using AASHTO specifications and MassDOT standards and provides data for overload reports of these bridges. * Confirms accuracy of calculations prepared by others related to Overload Capacity of bridges of moderate complexity using AASHTO specifications and reviews overload reports for these bridges. * Recommends modifications for improving live load capacity of existing bridges through review of available data, discussion, and calculations. Preferred Qualifications * Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering. * Knowledge of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in civil engineering. * Knowledge of the principles of hydraulics as applied to surface drainage pipes and culverts. * Knowledge of the engineering properties of soils. * Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of concrete and asphalt; mechanical properties of fluids; theory and practice of plane surveying. * Knowledge of the types & skill in the uses of equipment used in plane surveying; knowledge of the methods of soil testing. * Knowledge of mathematical formulae used to compute volumes and areas. * Knowledge of mathematical computations used in solving civil engineering problems. * Knowledge of elementary algebra, trigonometry, plane and solid geometry, integral and differential calculus; knowledge of the standard procedures for taking field notes in connection with plane surveying. * Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in building, bridge, highway, road, street or tunnel construction. * Knowledge of the types & skill in the uses of equipment used in plane surveying; knowledge of the methods of soil testing. * Knowledge of mathematical formulae used to compute volumes and areas. * Knowledge of mathematical computations used in solving civil engineering problems. * Knowledge of elementary algebra, trigonometry, plane and solid geometry, integral and differential calculus; knowledge of the standard procedures for taking field notes in connection with plane surveying. * Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of civil engineering data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. * Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, procedures, specifications and guidelines governing assigned unit activities and in connection with the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, buildings, etc. This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period. * About MassDOT * The 4,000 employees of Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) take great pride in connecting the Commonwealth’s residents and communities. Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions I. An Associate's degree with a major in civil engineeringor civil engineering technologymay be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience. II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in civil engineeringor civil engineering technology, may be substituted for the required experience. **NOTE: The terms civil engineering and civil engineering technology include related engineering disciplines such as construction, survey, hydraulics, design, transportation, structural, soils, sanitary, environmental, drafting, highway, architectural, mining, airport and materials. *Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
