Location: Print Shop, 3153 Lake Road, Horseheads, NY

Full-time position (1.0 FTE), 8 hours per day, 12 months per year, Competitive Civil Service Position

  • Supervises and evaluates one or more persons who initiate, layout, set up, and complete assigned printing jobs, using any and all of the equipment in the printing operation

  • Responsible for the staff members involved in the production, binding, and distribution of the finished product, including bulk mail preparation

  • Makes recommendations for the acquisition, disposition, repair and/or replacement of equipment and materials

  • Operates all of the printing equipment in the printing operation

  • Plans and lays out work

  • Observes equipment while in operation to ensure that it is operating properly and is in good working order

  • May punch, stitch, bind, fold, collate and/or stuff printed material

  • Keeps records of assigned and completed jobs, time consumed, materials used, and other factors affecting the pricing of work

  • Works with vendors to order and obtain supplies, materials, equipment and parts

  • Maintains responsibility for the day-to-day management of Print Shop and its staff

  • Maintains and works within the established budget

  • Makes recommendations for hiring of printing personnel, as needed

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications

This is a competitive Civil Service position. The selected candidate must possess this title or be among the top three of a current, binding Civil Service list for the title or if no binding Civil Service list be in the top three after taking the required Civil Service exam for the title.

Graduation from high school OR possession of high school equivalency diploma and three years of experience in performing printing operations in an educational or commercial setting.

  • Working knowledge of any and all printing techniques and equipment; possesses creative and innovative skills

  • Working knowledge of composition and layout as it pertains to the printing business;

  • Working knowledge of the proper care and maintenance of printing equipment;

  • Ability to effectively supervise staff;

  • Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions;

  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
