Full job description

This position is responsible for initiating, preparing, and finalizing legal condemnations.

  • Initiates, prepares, and finalizes legal condemnation documents to seize property for the Columbus Police Department Narcotics.

  • Performs lien holder checks, title searches, and stolen vehicle status on all seized vehicles.

  • Contacts lien holders and owners of seized vehicles to obtain information and documentation and to determine whether or not to proceed with forfeiture or to release vehicles to the proper parties.

  • Applies for titles on all seized and fleet vehicles; applies for confidential tags on fleet vehicles for Narcotics and Vice; maintains current registration for all fleet vehicles.

  • Enters all drugs and property seized into the Narcotics and Vice database for use in monthly reports.

  • Travel and Training Coordination: Responsible for reviewing and approving employee travel and training requests, coordinating necessary arrangements, and ensuring appropriate accommodations are made in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

  • Travels to and from related offices and agencies to obtain signatures, documents, and information; delivers and retrieve forfeiture files and judgment orders; acts as a liaison between all related agencies and offices.

  • Coordinates the sale of all property and vehicles received through court order for government auction.

  • Receives and communicates drug, prostitution, gambling, and other complaints to appropriate personnel.

  • Types, prepares, and maintains files of letters, memos, charts, and requests.

  • Receives and distributes all correspondence including subpoenas.

  • Orders and maintains supplies and equipment for office.

  • Answers the telephone; responds to or routes calls.

  • Appears in federal and state courts to provide testimony regarding documents pertaining to the seizure of property.

  • Prepares purchase orders; reviews invoices for accuracy; obtains price quotes and writes equipment specs and handles accounts payable for the Police Department.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.

  • Knowledge of modern office methods, procedures, and equipment.

  • Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction.

  • Skill in the operation of computers and other standard office equipment.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Possession of a valid driver’s license to operate the motor vehicle assigned. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing – maintain equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching.
  • Feeling – perceiving attributes of objects by touch with skin, fingertips.
  • Grasping – applying pressure to object with fingers, palm.
  • Handling – picking, holding, or working with whole hand.
  • Hearing 1 – perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, receive information.
  • Hearing 2 – receive detailed information, make discrimination in sound.
  • Kneeling – bending legs at knee to come to rest at knees.
  • Lifting – raising objects from lower to higher position, moving objects side to side, using upper extremities, back.
  • Manual Dexterity – picking, pinching, typing, working with fingers rather than hand.
  • Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.
  • Pushing – use upper extremities to press against objects with force, or thrust forward, downward, outward.
  • Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.
  • Talking 1- expressing ideas by spoken word.
  • Talking 2 – shouting to be heard above ambient noise.
  • Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
  • Visual Acuity 2 - color, depth perception, field of vision.
  • Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.
  • Visual Acuity 4 - operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment.
  • Visual Acuity 5 -close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts.
  • Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.

The work is typically performed in an office, library, or computer room.
