Full job description

Job Title: Construction Materials Testing (CMT) TechnicianJob Description

Perform field and laboratory testing, inspection, and documentation of construction materials to ensure compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and applicable codes. Accurately document test results, observations, and daily field activities. Communicate findings clearly with project managers, contractors, and clients. Identify and report deviations from project specifications or quality standards. Follow all safety protocols and promote a safe work environment. Prepare detailed reports in a timely manner using field and digital reporting systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field testing and inspection of construction materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate.

  • Conduct tests including compaction, concrete sampling, slump, air content, density, and moisture content.

  • Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications.

  • Maintain testing equipment, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.

  • Read and interpret construction plans and specifications.

  • Communicate findings and deviations with project managers and contractors.

  • Ensure safety protocols are followed at all times.

Essential Skills

  • Concrete testing and soil testing expertise.

  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and field reporting tools.

  • Experience with materials testing and nuclear density gauge.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate degree in a related field preferred).

  • 13 years of experience in construction materials testing or related field (entry-level candidates may be considered).

  • Relevant certifications preferred (ACI, NICET, ICC, or state-specific certifications) or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe.

  • Basic understanding of construction practices, materials, and quality control procedures.

  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Problem-solving mindset with attention to accuracy.

  • Physical ability to perform fieldwork, including lifting and working outdoors in varying conditions.

Work Environment

Combination of field and laboratory settings; frequent outdoor work in varying weather conditions; travel to job sites may be required.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Raleigh, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $52000.00 - $72800.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
