Full job description

Purpose:

The Junior Chemist provides chemistry, environmental data management, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) support for site characterization, remediation, monitoring, and environmental compliance projects. This position applies chemical principles, laboratory methods, and data analysis techniques to support the evaluation and reporting of environmental data across a variety of media, including air, groundwater, surface water, marine environments, sediment, and soil.

The Junior Chemist works collaboratively with chemists, scientists, project managers, and other technical professionals to support environmental projects from planning and sampling through data validation, interpretation, and reporting. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to clearly communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Essential Functions:

  • Support chemistry and environmental data management activities for site characterization, remediation, monitoring, and compliance projects.

  • Collaborate in the development of work plans for sampling, analyzing, evaluating, and reporting concentrations of contaminants and geochemical indicators across multiple environmental media.

  • Provide chemistry support throughout the project lifecycle, including planning, sampling, laboratory coordination, data management, data evaluation, and reporting.

  • Support the planning and execution of environmental compliance, investigation, monitoring, and remediation projects.

  • Manage, organize, review, and evaluate analytical laboratory and environmental data for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with project requirements.

  • Support implementation of project-specific QA/QC procedures for contamination investigations, remediation, monitoring, and compliance projects.

  • Review analytical data and supporting laboratory documentation to identify potential data quality issues and assist with resolution.

  • Coordinate with project teams and laboratories to support analytical requirements, data deliverables, and project schedules.

  • Analyze and interpret environmental chemistry data and assist in communicating findings through technical reports, tables, figures, summaries, and other project deliverables.

  • Assist in the development, production, review, and delivery of technical documents in accordance with applicable quality standards and established project schedules.

  • Assist with preparation of project progress documentation, including weekly and monthly status reports and other required project updates.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and subject matter experts to support environmental projects for federal and commercial clients.

  • Apply knowledge of environmental regulatory requirements and agency processes to assigned project activities.

  • Participate in environmental field activities and travel to project sites as required.

  • Maintain accurate and organized project data, analytical records, documentation, and supporting materials.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field.

Required Qualifications:

  • Three (3)+ years of experience performing scientific or chemistry-related work on environmental projects.

  • Working knowledge of chemical principles, laboratory techniques, environmental analytical methods, and environmental data.

  • Experience supporting environmental data management and QA/QC activities.

  • Knowledge of environmental regulatory compliance and agency coordination.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical and analytical data and communicate findings clearly.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary project teams and subject matter experts.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, discretion, and initiative.

  • Ability to remain focused and effective in a dynamic environment with competing priorities and deadlines.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.

  • Ability to travel for field work as required.

  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or ability to complete required training within six months of hire.

  • Experience with environmental projects in Alaska and working under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) programs is preferred.
