Full job description

The Omega Group in the Physics Department has an opening for a postdoc to join in the development of new detector technologies featuring silicon carbide. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the study of Electroweak and Higgs physics on ATLAS and for future collider experiments. Applicants should have a strong interest in and experience with detector R&D for the collider scientific program. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community. The Omega Group in the Physics Department at BNL focuses on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. The Omega Group has major responsibilities in the operation of the Liquid Argon calorimeter, Trigger & Data Acquisition, and software development, and has leading roles in the ATLAS High Luminosity Large-Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) upgrade (Silicon Strip detector, Liquid Argon calorimeter, and Trigger & Data Acquisition). The group also has strong detector R&D programs on silicon detectors and in trigger/data acquisition. BNL serves as the host laboratory for the U.S. ATLAS Operations Program, the U.S. ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade Project, the ATLAS Tier-1 computing facility, and is an active U.S. ATLAS Center.Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Participation in detector research and development, especially for tracking and timing systems utilizing silicon carbide. * Participation in the ATLAS scientific program with a strong focus on Electroweak and Higgs physics. * Development of new artificial-intelligence and machine-learning techniques for high-energy physicsRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Ph.D. in experimental particle or nuclear physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or related disciplines * Experience with detector R&D for tracking and timing systems * Experience with laboratory equipment, design, simulation, and testing * Experience in detector performance or trigger systems * Experience with data analysis and knowledge of statistical techniques for data analysis * Ability to work in a large international collaboration * Hands-on problem solving skills and clear and concise verbal and written communication skills * Demonstrated track record of publication of research in high quality peer-reviewed journals and delivery of presentations Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Expertise in detector R&D and construction * Physics analysis with LHC data * Experience with machine learning techniques and tools * Experience with computing and software developmentOTHER INFORMATION: * Domestic and international travel should be expected * This position is located at BNL in Upton, New York * Initial 2-year term appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding * BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events * PhD must be obtained prior to commencing employment * References will be requested at the appropriate point in the recruitment process. * Application deadline for submission of all materials is March 21, 2026.
