Description

The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (P.V.S.C.), a publicly-owned wastewater treatment facility located in Newark, New Jersey, is currently accepting applications for an Analytical Chemistry Intern. Created in 1902, PVSC is the 5th largest facility of its kind in the United States, directly serving approximately 1.4 million residents in 48 municipalities located in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. The 140-acre plant is designed to treat an average of 330 million gallons per day (“mgd”) of wastewater with an annual average flow of approximately 241 mgd.

Minimum Requirements

Position Summary: The PVSC Analytical Lab is certified in many parameters with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP); BOD, CBOD, COD, TSS, Ammonia, Cyanide, Oil and Grease, all metals and many others. Samples are analyzed daily from the PVSC plant process as well as industrial monitoring samples, liquid waste acceptance and harbor study river waters. On average about 10,000 samples a month are analyzed for multiple parameters. The Intern will work with the samples from the chain of custody to proper disposal. He or she will learn the operation of LIMS and report writing.

Experience: Applicants should be pursuing a degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science or Chemical Engineering. Strong computer skills: word, excel. Be able to organize assigned workload and safety conscious.

Requirements: Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position and carry out oral and written instruction. Must be able to learn the key elements of maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.

Working Conditions: Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors.

This is a paid internship at $17 per hour, for approximately 20 hours per week over a 3-to-6-month program.
