Location: Binghamton, NY Category: Faculty Job Type: Full-time Posted On: Mon Sep 21 2026 Job Description:

Department Overview:

The Department of Social Work is entering an exciting period of growth and innovation. In addition to expanding its Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) programs, the Department is actively developing a PhD program in Social Work, creating new opportunities for faculty leadership in doctoral education, research mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the advancement of the social work profession. The development of the PhD program reflects both the Department's growth and Binghamton University's broader commitment to expanding high-impact graduate and doctoral education within its R1 research environment.

The Department is part of College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA), an interdisciplinary college focused on preparing students for careers and leadership in public and community service. CCPA brings together Social Work, Human Development, Public Administration and Policy, Higher Education and Student Affairs, and Teaching, Learning and Educational Leadership, alongside the interdisciplinary Community Research and Action PhD program. The College emphasizes social justice, interdisciplinary collaboration, applied scholarship, and meaningful engagement with local, regional, national, and global communities. Located in downtown Binghamton, CCPA is closely connected to a broad network of community agencies, schools, health and human service organizations, government entities, and nonprofit partners.

The Department offers a growing BSW program, a long-standing in-person MSW program, and an exclusively online MSW program, including full-time, part-time, and advanced standing pathways. The Department's programs are grounded in social justice, multisystem practice, community engagement, and a commitment to preparing social workers to address complex social problems across individuals, families, organizations, and communities.

Job Description:

Binghamton University is seeking faculty members at open rank Professor specializing in advanced quantitative methods or applied statistics to join its Department of Social Work within the CCPA. We seek a collegial and collaborative scholar whose expertise in advanced quantitative methods will strengthen the Department's research capacity and complement faculty whose primary expertise lies in substantive areas of social work, social policy, education, health, and human services.

The candidate's substantive area of research specialization is open. We particularly welcome scholars who develop or apply advanced quantitative methods to complex, real-world data, including administrative, longitudinal, multilevel, multisystem, geospatial, linked, and community-engaged datasets. We are especially interested in scholarship that advances social justice, examines social and structural determinants of health and well-being, informs equitable policy and practice, and addresses systemic inequities affecting marginalized and historically underserved populations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a methodological partner to faculty and graduate students, and interdisciplinary research teams across the full research lifecycle, including:

  • study design

  • measurement

  • data management and linkage

  • statistical analysis

  • interpretation

  • grant development

  • dissemination

  • Contribute intellectually to substantive research initiatives and promote rigorous, transparent, and responsible use of quantitative methods.

  • Maintain an active program of independent and/or collaborative scholarship appropriate for tenure and promotion, with opportunities to pursue external funding as a principal investigator, co-investigator, methodological collaborator, or statistical lead.

  • Teach and develop advanced level statistics and quantitative methods courses that are rigorous, accessible, and applicable to social work and related social and behavioral sciences. Teaching may include areas such as:

  • multilevel and longitudinal modeling

  • latent-variable methods

  • causal inference

  • psychometrics and measurement

  • Bayesian methods

  • missing-data methods

  • computational methods

  • machine learning

  • reproducible research practices

Binghamton University offers a collegial, collaborative environment within a nationally recognized R1 research institution. Faculty benefit from competitive salaries, research support and start-up resources, and extensive opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and community-engaged scholarship. Binghamton's research enterprise is supported by substantial institutional investment and a university-wide commitment to translating research into meaningful impact.

Diversity and Inclusion: Binghamton University remains committed to and supports diversity and inclusion as integral to academic excellence. We actively seek applications from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, sexual minorities, veterans, persons with disabilities, and women.

Job Requirements:

Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree conferred by August 1, 2027 in statistics, biostatistics, quantitative psychology, or a closely aligned discipline

  • Candidates whose doctorates are in social work, psychology, public health, education, economics, sociology, data science, public policy, or another closely related field will also be considered if they demonstrate a strong background in advanced quantitative analysis

  • Experience working with researchers across multiple substantive areas and adapting quantitative methods

  • The ability to translate substantive research questions into rigorous and feasible quantitative designs and analytic plans

  • Demonstrated high-quality teaching, advising, and student mentorship

  • A record of independent and collaborative scholarship

Preferred:

  • Expertise analyzing complex datasets

  • Experience working with large-scale data from human-service systems or other real-world settings

  • Experience contributing to externally funded, team-based research

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate quantitative methods to students and colleagues with varied levels of statistical preparation

  • Experience with reproducible and responsible research practices, (e.g., transparent analytic workflows, data documentation, and appropriate data-sharing practices)

  • Scholarship addressing social determinants of health and well-being, systemic or structural inequities

  • Experience incorporating critical, anti-racist, or equity-centered perspectives into quantitative research design, measurement, analysis, and interpretation

  • Potential to contribute to interdisciplinary research initiatives
