Description:

The Financial Reporting Accountant supports the University’s financial reporting and general accounting functions by preparing financial reports, reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and analyses. The position helps ensure the accuracy and integrity of the University’s financial records and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ( GAAP ), Governmental Accounting Standards Board ( GASB ) requirements, UNC System guidance, and State of North Carolina requirements. The primary purpose of this position is to perform professional accounting functions for all University special funds, including bond funds, capital improvement funds, and other restricted funds designated under this classification. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of all related financial transactions and records. The incumbent will interpret, apply, and implement policies and procedures established by the University, the State of North Carolina, and applicable federal agencies. In addition, this position plays a key role in monthly, quarterly, and annual closeout activities, including reconciliation and financial statement preparation for capital and special funds, and contributes to the completion of the University’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report ( CAFR ).

The position reports to the Assistant Director of Financial Reporting and works closely with other accounting staff and campus business units to strengthen financial reporting, general accounting operations, internal controls, and audit readiness.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The mission of the Accounting Office, is to provide an effective and efficient financial reporting and cash management/disbursement operation within the Comptroller’s Office, which supports the instructional and research mission of the University

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate’s degree in Accounting; or Associate’s degree in Business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred:

Experience in higher education accounting.

Experience with GASB financial reporting.

Experience with Banner Finance or a comparable ERP system.

Experience preparing financial statements, audit workpapers, account reconciliations, and complex journal entries.

Hiring preference given to qualified internal candidates.
