Equipment & Process Technician – PVD Coating

Like figuring out why a machine stopped? We have the machines.

Surface Solutions has been applying PVD coatings in Fridley since 1995. Cutting tools,

molds, dies and precision parts come in. They go into our vacuum chambers and come out

with TiN, AlTiN, CrN, TiCN or our proprietary Alpha coating, lasting several times longer in

service. When the chamber is down, parts stop shipping. We need the person who gets it

running again and then finds out why it went down.

This is a hands-on role in a small shop. You won't be one of 40 techs in a work-order queue.

You'll own the equipment, learn the coating process, and design and build the fixtures and

machines that make us better. People who like variety thrive here; people who want the

same task every day won't.

What you'll do

 Diagnosing and repairing faults on cathodic-arc PVD coating systems: vacuum

pumps, gauges, valves, power supplies, heaters, PLC/controls and wiring

 Find and fix vacuum leaks and pump-down problems

 Keep the support equipment running: chillers, air compressors, cooling water,

cleaning and prep equipment

 Plan and perform preventive maintenance so breakdowns happen less often

 Read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings; troubleshoot down to the

component

 Learn the coating process and run production when needed: cleaning, fixturing,

loading and coating customer tools

 Design and build fixtures that hold parts in the chamber, from sketch or CAD to

finished part

 Help build, rebuild or upgrade coating and support equipment

 Order parts and work with equipment vendors

 Write down what you fixed and how, so the next failure is faster to solve

 Suggest improvements to equipment uptime, reliability and safety

Minimum Education Required

Trade School or college grad.

Minimum Experience Required

3+ years of hands-on industrial maintenance, field service or equipment repair

 Solid electrical troubleshooting: 480V three-phase, 24VDC controls, motors,

contactors, relays, sensors

 Mechanical skills: pumps, seals, fittings, plumbing, pneumatics

 Comfortable with a multimeter and schematics, and with working through a

problem methodically
